Folks wearing masks

Flying back from Geneva yesterday and shocked by the number of people wearing masks.
Surely it's pretty easy to understand that by wearing a big piece of damp fabric on your face it is likely to attract and retain any airborne contaminants.
Where they are worn by medics, they are replaced on a very regular basis and not kept for hours / days at a time.
The other explanation is that perhaps all these people had a cough or other symptoms and I was in fact witnessing a selfless act as they were trying to protect the rest of us

Given the variety of 'solutions' on the Tube that have appeared in the news, I'm looking forward to the first proper gimp mask appearing.

We wear these exact masks at work, due to me having a chronic lung condition I might start wearing it to and from work and in the supermarket too. Frankly I couldn't give a fk if I look ridiculous!

Usual Chinese approach to a cold or similar is that the infected person wears the mask. ( at least with the chinese i work with ) - this is to stop them sneezing and infecting other people.
Given that it enters the body through mouth , nose or eyes .. then unless you are covering all these then your not protecting yourself .

Facemasks and respirators
4.12 Facemasks and respirators have a role in providing healthcare worker protection, as
long as they are used correctly and in conjunction with other infection control practices,
such as appropriate hand hygiene and, most importantly, vaccination of frontline
healthcare workers as soon as vaccine becomes available.
4.13 Facemasks, or surgical masks, are primarily designed to protect the environment from
particles expelled by the wearer. If fitted properly, and used and changed in accordance
with manufacturers instructions, they provide a physical barrier to large droplets but will
not provide full respiratory protection against smaller particles such as aerosols.
4.14 Respirators are more sophisticated than facemasks and are designed to protect the
wearer from breathing in fine or very small airborne particles (i.e. aerosols), which might
contain viruses and other microorganisms, in addition to larger droplets. They should be
worn when performing procedures that have the potential to generate infectious
aerosols; examples include intubation, extubation and related procedures. It is a legal
requirement that anyone who might be required to wear a respirator be fit-tested to
ensure that an adequate seal can be achieved to provide the best level of protection
and that training in use be provided. More than one make of respirator should be made
available to help account for different face shapes among employees.

As for the masks, a bit of a waste of time unless they're fully sealed respirators but I've yet to see anyone wearing one of those.

Just before Christmas I added an extra 100mm of fibreglass insulation to my loft floor and fitted new cold water tanks.
There is no way I would have done that without a mask. You can see by the dirty areas just where the air has been passing through,
or the gaps where the mask didn't fit. (If it wasn't worn properly).
