My MIL is end of life on the Isle of Wight. We live in bucks. We can drive without stopping to the ferry stay in car get to hospice see her alone then same return.

Wife really wants to go to say goodbye.

I’m worried that despite the precautions we don’t pass the “essential travel” criteria.

Views?

As this PH car is a new (generally) very reliable Touareg. Car is full of fuel and had 600 mile range

I’m erring towards no but this is my wife’s mother. She is and can FaceTime daily

I think you’d get away with it TBH. Worst case is a fine, I’d pay it myself.

Do you qualify under this condition ?
  • any medical need, including to donate blood, avoid or escape risk of injury or harm, or to provide care or to help a vulnerable person.
I think one of the ferries from Portsmouth (not all) allows you to stay in your vehicle during the crossing.

The worst that can happen is that you'll be stopped and turned back. I'd take that chance.

You're not being a dick. Take sensible precautions to protect you, your MIL and those that care for her (which it sounds like you are) and go.

All done ok. EOL life drugs started to address pain. Maybe a few days left. Spoke to bucks police who advised ok to go and go again unless policy changes. Drove all way there and back and touched no one and didn’t leave the car. Masks gowns and gloves at hospice.

Stay safe one and all.

Glad you made it OK, and that they let you in. I learnt earlier this evening that my uncle is EoL in a hospital, no visitors allowed, not even his wife & my cousins (his kids). Terrible.

Does he have Coronavirus?

Could he self-discharge??

It is really sad, but the hospital can't take the chance that someone might bring in Covid. And they can't spare the PPE for visitors because they need it all for treatment, plus can't spare the time to teach someone to use it properly.

Sorry, but this is the harsh reality of the situation.

I live on the island. At present we have very few CV cases. There is a campaign to stop non essential travel ( social, work or other) to the island. There has been an influx of people coming to their second homes here.

We have a high proportion of elderly and vulnerable people, with NHS capacity even lower than most regions ( according to the media).

I absolutely symphasise with your plight, just consider your actions......

Thank you.

It's the hospital's rules. The paramedics who picked him up actually suggested the family completed their goodbyes before they took him in.

He doesn't have Corona. Double pneumonia (unrelated), liver failure and long-term dementia. He wouldn't know how to self-discharge any more, sadly.
