Covid-19 Death Rate

I have heard numbers from 1.5-3% generally talked about as the death rate for COVID-19.

However when I look at the data, it looks more like 20% to me.

If I look at Worldometers, it shows a current number of closed cases of a little over 800k and of that, 168k deaths. By my calculation, that’s a little more than 20%.

Where am I going wrong here with my math(s)? Obviously this doesn’t account for people who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms but no data can reliably add those in.

unfortunately it is pointless trying to look at death rates. Every country has a different approach to testing and in the UK we only test when you are admitted to hospital, so our figures will show a high death rate. To get the best gauge look at countries that have the highest test numbers relative to their population. Last I read was that death rate was thought to be 1-2%.
Also don't think the worldometers are even close to accurate. Last time I looked at one it said the total number of recoveries in UK was 135! that was about a week ago.
