Marks on glasses
Discussion
I have some annoying marks on my glasses, which I cannot seem to get off. They are not visible 99% of the time when wearing them, but when it is visible it's very annoying. I believe the cause of the staining has come from the use of Poorboys wheel cleaner, one in the below link. So be very careful if you are spraying this on your wheels while wearing your glasses.

Anyone have any tips to trying to clean these marks off?? I've tried a variety of cleaners including Cif cream, but nothing has any impact. I've even tried toothpaste but again, no impact. See below photos.

Yes, it looks like you've mullered the coating. Your optician can get them recoated.
Sadly no they can't. If the coating is starting to flake off then the lens is done for. I've had a few stripped in the past but its almost as cheap to buy a new set of uncoated lenses and they will be better than a stripped old lens. I wouldn't bother getting it stripped. Most good quality lenses will have a 2 yr coating guarantee. The manufacturer will want to see them but they will replace them FOC.
Sadly a lot of practices aren't available to do that sort of thing at the moment although the manufacturers will be open.
ETA ok I should read all the OP. Don't use CIF or toothpaste its just an abrasive and it the coating is coming off it will make it worse and damage the surface you do have. As long as they aren't polycarbonate you can try acetone. If they are PC acetone will dissolve them, you have been warned.
As you feel the damage is self inflicted the guarantee is less likely to work!

Thanks for the helpful advice, I hadn't considered that it might be the coating that is damaged. I suspect the Poorboys wheel cleaner, which strips dirt from wheels just by spraying and rinsing, has stripped the coating. I was hoping I could just try something to remove the damage until lockdown is eased and I can get to the optician. Seems I just need to live with it for time being.
Thanks again though.
Thanks again though.

Make your mind up. First you say no they can't be recoated then you say they can but it's expensive. I've had a pair done & they were fine.
Sounds like you've had your card marked but I'll just correct you.I said you can't have them recoated but you can have the old coating stripped off. Again, as I said, it generally isn't worth the money or the aggravation. Actually I've just checked the back of the Norville catalgue and they no longer seem to offer coating stripping.
In theory a lens could go back through the vacuum coating process but they are held in little 3 point clamps which obviously makes a mark in the coating. As they are in their "uncut" form usually this doesn't matter as it gets cut off in the finshed, glazed lens. On a finished, glazed lens this would leave marks and be a weak point from where the coating would start to lift again.
So effectively no you can't.
When I said the manufacturers would replace them I meant the lenses in their entirety not the coatings. That wasn't as clear as it might be but only because you can't replace the coating.
Did you get anywhere OP? If you would like some more you can post them to me at work either with a prescription if you have one or I can measure them from the lenses.

That cleaner sounds like nasty stuff - a pain if it ruined your glasses, but could have been worse if you weren’t wearing them and it went in your eyes!
Looks very much like DKL knows his stuff - always good to have a proper expert join a thread.
Pointy is an armchair expert at a lot of topics, but I’ve seen no evidence of mastery in any. He questioned my parenting skills a couple of months ago (Called me the ‘worst sort of helicopter parent’
) and I had a little look through his posts.
If only there was a ‘mute member’ option in the forum...

Many thanks for your offer, however these are the only pair (other than prescription sunglasses) I have, so I can't be without them. They'll do until lockdown is eased and I can get back to the opticians. Unfortunately my eye test lapsed 2 months back, so I couldn't even order any online.Edited by DKL on Monday 27th April 11:47

If you know your prescription you should be able to order from somewhere like Glasses Direct? Obviously worth getting a test when you can but using your old prescription is surely better than nothing.I had an anti-glare coating breakdown twice within Specsavers two year guarantee period. They replaced the lenses free of charge both times.
They said my strong prescription and high refractive index lenses made it more difficult for the coatings to perform/ adhere/ work. Not sure how true that was??
I use plenty of car cleaning products and I had not linked it to them, but I suppose it is possible??

However like every other high st business we are still losing money hand over fist currently.
If your Optician is still open (and a lot of us are for emergencies), they maybe able to get you replacement lenses if your spectacles are essential for you to function. If your prescription is out of date, we have been given a telephone consult form to complete.
The majority of lens manufacturers are working, initially every thing was very slow with simple jobs we which could normally turn round in a day or two taking three weeks, but it is improving as they settle into new working patterns.
It could be sometime before routine sight tests resume so replacement lenses may be your best option.
