Hi all,

About 8 weeks ago I pulled out an old gym routine that an instructor put together for me a few years ago. Got right back into it and have seen some benefits already. It's a 5-way split: chest, arms, back, shoulders, legs.

However it's full of supersets, dropsets and generally an 8-12 rep pattern - but a lot of reading I've done in the meantime suggests heavier weight for 6-8 reps is more beneficial.

Goals are the normal: fat loss and #gainz

Any pearls of wisdom?

Try it and see!

I do lighter these days and experience far fewer injuries but then I'm old.

Depends what you are trying to achieve. Your current plan is designed to add size primarily.

As a guide, 6 or less prioritises strength. 8-12 prioritises size and more than 12 prioritises endurance. Not gospel and will change depending how they are programmed.

Thanks - that's a really simple way to understand it!

I'm no expert but I don't like that split. Your over working the same muscles with no time to rest.

For example chest arms back shoulders legs....

On chest day you will still work your triceps, then you will work them again the next day and biceps, biceps will also get worked the next day with back.

I'd suggest either push pull legs split or the 5 x 5 strongman. I mix between these and have found them to be very effective.

Try the wiki on r/fitnesss on Reddit. It’s excellent for beginners. Lots of great programmes out there.

A bro split is very unlikely to be the best bet for you.
