I used to eat read meat (steaks) as a regularish treat but have not eaten steak or red meat for a long time now.

At the weekend we had steak for dinner and the next day the bowl was full of blood. I've since thrown up food and today my bowl was really dark red. I rested for a while but could feel the need to revisit the loo but nothing happened yet I could hear a steady drip drip, yup blood and more blood.

Awaiting a call from the doctors but is this anything that could be as a result of my body digesting something it hasn't touched in a while (12 months)?

Coincidentally my partner has been under investigation for blood in her stool but this has been going on for 18 months, she's had tests, tests, more tests but nothing conclusive.

Dark blood is more of a worry than red blood. You need to see a doctor.

waiting for them to call back, what is deemed as dark vs light, is it akin to rosé vs red?

Have a Google whilst you're waiting for the doc to come back to you.

having a look, its maroon which indicates higher colon or lower bowel, hopefully doc will phone back at some point today

Making a call with the dr is a good start, so many people just put this stuff off for weeks, and months.

Bright blood is easy to spot, imagine cutting your finger in the kitchen and using the paper to dry it, super bright and for lack of a better word fresh, often indicates an issue lower down toward the anus.
Darker blood as you have said is often maroon in colour and most times would indicate something going on slightly higher up.
While a change in bowel habits can happen when you change your diet, bleeding over a period of time is not one.

Lots of info out there, the NHS website is quite spot on with what you can expect.
Let us know how you get on with the phone call.

Booked in for blood tests tomorrow, hopefully it is just a reaction to eating the steak. There has been movements in between which has been blood free but Monday = blood + feeling sick, yesterday was sick, this morning was blood.

After spending 4 years with misdiagnosed gallstones, this led to bleeding due to an infection in my bowel as a result of the inflamed/infected gallbladder. Then the colonoscopy revealed a healthy colon so hopefully it is still the case

You are right though on getting in touch, I always do now if I notice a significant change. My first partner, her dad died in his 40s due to bowel cancer that wasnt caught in time

Happy to hear you have managed to get some tests arranged for tomorrow,
I would still want to get a stool test the FIT type, just to see if there is any inflammation going on down there.

40s is no age with bowel cancer, but its unfortunately happening in younger people and being diagnosed later.

As you know, bleeding from there does not always mean its something serious, but its best to get it seen to promptly.
Best of luck for tomorrow, seems like you have it under control.

Thanks

Getting a stool test is the issue at the minute, in the slow build up to getting back into able To eat something for three to be anything to pass

I discussed the gallstone issue and that they were removed (not the gallbladder) due to internal scaring from open surgery 20 years back

Hopefully it’s nothing

Why is getting a stool test difficult? Our local hospital has been doing them throughout COVID.

No, don't do this, it's the worst possible advice. You'll simply believe whatever internet diagnosis you want to fit the symptoms depending on whether you're optimistic or not. Just wait for the Dr.

He was asking about differing blood colours and I wasn't going to Google it for him. Furthermore, he seems like an intelligent chap and therefore able to interpret what he reads without immediately assuming it's serious.

Only the neurotic should avoid Googling medical matters, IMHO.

hehe I'm not a hypocondriact but had a look at examples to find the different colours and types, I'm not panicked but relieved I managed to get a test so soon.

Regarding stool test, I was on about my ability to pass one being a difficult ask at the minute

Suspect you have haemorrhoids but glad to hear it’s being investigated.

Could be piles - could be ulcerative colitis.
I think black blood in stools is of more concern.
Good you're getting it checked out though.

The vomiting is a bit odd.

It's a nice facility to be able to discuss your bowel movements with strangers on the Internet though, isn't it.

It could be many, many things but with the history given, my money is on haemorrhoids.

Yup, the power of anonymity!

Its the vomiting too that is adding to the worry scale

You shouldn't worry about it. It might be piles, polyps, diverticular disease, an infection, food poisoning or your wife may be trying to bump you off by slipping something into your tea.
