Eyesight failing rapidly during lockdown
Discussion
Is it just me?
I had a pair of reading specs just before lockdown that I’d use occasionally if I had to read tiny text. Now due to lockdown and WFH I’ve become more and more reliant on them. I need to use them to read text messages and emails where 3 months ago I didn’t need specs for this.
I even feel I need them when I’m eating a plate of food because I just can’t see it properly any more. Normal??

not just you, I've been mainly working from home, laptop/ computer screen all day. I definitely think my eyesight for close up work has got worse. I'd have them on the end of my nose just for reading small text, now pretty much have to use them for computer work all the time! Abnormal until proved otherwise. Don’t ignore it.
Contact an optician to get a full examination as there are potentially various causes that they can test for.
If no changes since your last check-up I’d suggest contacting your GP - undiagnosed diabetes is a not infrequent cause of a reduction in visual acuity over the space of weeks/months, though generally speaking you’d be experiencing other symptoms e.g. peeing like a drain, constant thirst and weight loss.

There's an anecdote that applied to many US prisoners who spend so long locked in their cells that, when released, they find their eyesight is screwed due to not having to focus on distant objects for so long...
I am finding some issues too. It's a the point where I have to purposefully take some time away from the screen to let my eyes recover.

It's said the max you should look at a screen (I suppose it probably applies to anything) is 50 mins then 10 mins doing something else. I'm sure many are doing far longer than that. Films would need to go back to having an interval (like they used to).I'm amazed no one has mentioned driving to Barnard Castle yet, you lot are slipping.
On a serious note, I've bee short sighted since about the age of 10, ie 57 years ago. It deteriorated more when CAD came along in 1989 and I was staring at a screen for 8 hours a day. It also accentuated dazzle from bright lights. I can't pull up behind a car in a queue if they have their foot on the high level brake light, headlights now dazzle me more (yes they are brighter) and my eyes take longer to recover vision once dazzled. It's age as well of course but convinced ACAD has also made things worse.

The wrong side of 45!:
Anyway we're pretty much all open now so you can come and get your eyes checked and all will be well again.

Reminds me of a link posted in the wikipedia thread about an abused child called Genie. She was noted to have problems focusing her vision on objects more than several feet away after being locked in a bedroom for years. I am finding some issues too.
