Umbilical Hernia - start with the Doctor?

I seem to have given myself what I am 95% sure is an umbilical hernia.
It's an area about the size of a 2p above my belly button which bulges painfully if I strain but if I hold the bulge back gently with my fingers there is no pain. You can pretty much feel the gap in the muscle wall.
I've had a little read and resigned myself to the fact that this will need surgery to correct but I'm not sure where to start. the online NHS direct was fairly useless as is our local Doctor unfortunately but presumably I am best to book an appointment with them for next week to kick the process off?
It does not seem to be strangulated or anything, it's just a bit painful so I've ordered a hernia belt off Amazon as well in case that will help while I'm waiting.
Any advice welcome.

If you’re not in severe pain, not vomiting, are able to fart/s
t, can push it back in and if you’re otherwise feeling well then 111 will likely tell you to book an appointment with your GP as their role in this instance is to decide on whether or not you need to go to hospital (i.e. because of strangulation). You will need a referral from your GP for surgery. However this may not be forthcoming immediately due to the significant restriction of elective and outpatient services.
