Femoral nail 'owners'

I know there are a few of those on here with femur nails, probably mostly motorcyclists or ex-motorcyclists.

For any of you who have fixed nails (screw top and bottom), do you get any discomfort around the knee?

Mines been in 10 years now and after certain activity I've had minor pain on the inner side of the knee (opposite the screw entry) however recently climbing stairs can result in more moderate pain and feeling like I should get it looked at.

Can be easily sorted if a (locking) screw is protruding

I can't help on this one as mine is un-fixed but it's not given me any trouble in the 30+ years it's been there.

I had a couple of pins on the inside of my ankle and within a matter of a few months they had worked loose and had to come out.

All sorts of things can happen to old bits of metal, locking screws can start to wobble, small bits can break and whole nails can extrude through the bone with a few described cases of extrusion through the skin. Removal of a locking screw is usually no trouble, and even the whole femoral nail itself can be removed if need be. See your GP and ask to be referred to orthopaedics.

I have a Femoral nail among other bits of metal and your correct Ex Motorcyclist. My knee has started to play up over the last year or two (Op was 2011) , not all the time but occasionally I can feel "something" not sure if I would call it pain but its not comfortable. if it continues I will get it looked into. I have heard its normally caused but one of the screws loosening up a tad.
