Hi all.

Really enjoyed running over the last so many years, just recovered, finally from having the dreaded ‘planter fasciitis’. Bloody hell did that take a long time to go.

The thing now is, after I’ve been running for a while, i get a bit of discomfort on the outside of my right knee.

I’ve been looking into this, so far found it could be a piece of cartilage or something that’s broken of and is sort of floating around and irritating my knee when running.

I had this even before my plantar fasciitis started, bloody irritating, especially during 10k’s or half marathon’s.

Has anyone else had this and what was or is the cure.

Been thinking of trying to get ana X-ray then possibly surgery.

Any thoughts would be great.

Thank you.

Dave S.

I've been running for nearly 20 years and whenever I’ve had knee pain, inside or outside the knee, it’s been muscular rather than actual knee and the source is further up the leg.

For example; I had outer knee pain which was diagnosed as ITB tightness. Quickly resolved.

Simply see a physio before even contemplating x-rays or surgery.

I also had pain on the outside of my knee when I tried to start running more. I would have put money on it being an actually problem with the knee itself.

Following advice from a friend who is a more serious runner I saw a physio who diagnosed IT band problem, gave me a massage and some stretches to do three times a day. Problem hasn’t come back since.

Interesting.. I’ve had a weak knee for a while and recently noticed I can flex my quads on one leg but not the other. I can walk/run/cycle without pain, but something muscular is happening. I thought it’d be the knee causing muscle problems not the other way around, but will see if I can get a physio appt for further advice!

Just watched some videos re the IT Band.
Will try the exercises they all suggest.
Like just been said, I thought a knee problem, but looks like muscular related.

There is Hope yet.

Outside of the knee pain on one leg and then a few weeks later the other leg, IT bands, a few painful sessions with the foam roller and they've been fine ever since.

I had a weird pain on the top and side of my knee in my mid/late 20's. It came and went. For example I played Sunday League and could easily play 90 minutes pain free, then the next morning it was agony on the top of my kneecap.

Then training on 7-a-side pitch on Monday evenings I could warm up and easily play for 2-3 hours before warming down, again pain free. Then the next morning it would be agony for a few hours then a knee rub and it would be fine.

Unfortunately someone fked my L5S1 slamming into me while stationary at speed 18 months ago so it'll be a while before I can even walk normally let alone run or kick a ball about.

See a physio. Do not guess from stuff on YouTube.

It won't be that expensive, you'll likely only need one session and the physio will give you some good tips on injury prevention in the future.

I think your right.
Need to book appointment.
Probably try foam roller first before physio.

It's your choice, but I'd book straight into a physio. Mine did not recommend foam rolling for the IT band problem, with a massage and the correct stretches being much more effective.

Would you definitely know where to do the foam rolling? The muscles attached to the IT band which were causing my problem were right at the top of my leg.

For the sake of £30 - £40 I'd go see an expert and get some specific treatment.

I had this first when mountain biking, on long rides used to hit around 40 miles and my right leg wouldn't straighten and pain on the outside like you described. I saw physio's and the like but nobody could fix it, rested it for months and it came straight back.

Found a stretch on Utube that involved laying your leg at 45dg on the kitchen worktop and leaning over it. Literally fixed it in a week!

My wife is an (ex) physio of over 20 year experience.
I have knee trouble
She tells me it's "wear & tear" and running is only making it worse with 7 times your body weight going through the joint.
Encouraging she is not.
