I suffer from really tight Achilles (I presume tendinitis) last night the lump looked like a little grape on my Achilles which would move up and down if I moved my foot back and forth, is there anything I can do at home to help this?? I take it I should try move away from anything like running/hill walking and try do more exercise like cyling/swimming ?

TIA

I'd get a proper diagnosis if I were you and perhaps try to see a physio if confirmed. There are certainly things you can do at home that will help with achilles tendonitis as part of a structured rehabilitation programme. Heel drops and calf stretches were the two main ones in my case.

Good luck

You can't really have a tight achilles, being a tendon it doesn't stretch or contract all that much. What you likely have is tight calves, per the previous post there are some good stretches you can do - hold each one for 30secs - 1minute and you should see some progress over a few weeks.

There's also some socks or a boot you can wear that treat plantar fasciitis, these hold your foot at 90deg to the leg and give the calf a very gently stretch overnight - they did wonders for my achilles/calf.

ETA - a lump on the achilles is not normal and should be investigated.

I had this about 6 years ago. It was a partial tear that had healed badly. Rather than the fibers in the tendon being nice and straight they healed like a ball of spaghetti. I was given physio and lots of calf stretches which saw it off fairly quickly.

Mine was super painful, if I knocked it on something it would send me into the stratosphere!

Go to your GP and they'll refer you.
