I'm looking to setup a home gym, initially with free weights, kettlebells and floor mats.

Can anyone recommend decent suppliers please? Either online or if bricks and mortar, then West of Scotland.

Thanks.

We got most of our kit from Fitness Superstore: https://www.fitness-superstore.co.uk/ lots of selection

I've also got a few bits from Mirafit: https://mirafit.co.uk/ You could easily build a whole gym out of just their stuff, but need to check prices. Some stuff is reasonable, others fairly overpriced compared to other brands.

Thank you, I'll price up some kit with the both of them.

Did you buy floor mats and if so what type? I can't quite believe how expensive some of the options are!

2nd Mirafit. Got a whole setup from them in covid, bar, plates, bench and power rack. Good stuff, great service. Definitely recommend.

Yeah mirafit can be hit n miss on vfm.

Rival strength can be better quality.

A lot of stuff can be the same item just rebranded too....often at considerably different prices

I used foam garage floor matting, think it might have been from Halfords. Wasn't expensive at all. Comes in squares that lock together

Ebay.

I equipped an entire home gym for around £1k.. Some of it was still in warranty.

I had a bike, cross trainer, treadmill, bench with bar and plates, dumbbells. The only thing I bought new was a Concept 2 erg. I got 15% off retail by way of store credit.

When I sold it all I got my money back. I made a profit on the erg.

Basically, gym kit is something that a lot of people buy at retail and then don't use. It then becomes a burden and they want to move it on. They don't care what the loss is.

I would suggest you look out for good second hand stuff, because what happens is many people spend a lot of money on nice shiny equipment and lose interest after a year or so, especially things like exercise bikes, treadmills and rowers.

A 30 year old 20k barbell weight is just as good as a new one,

If you are more serious go for the olympic free weights and bars, but for normal use the one inch dia (25mm) equipment is fine.

ALWAYS wear a good quality leather belt and gloves when lifting heavy weights.

I went with 20mm rubber mats. 2.5m square area. Unless you were going silly heavy I don’t know why you’d need more than 20mm. Other than dust and dirt they still look brand new.

I recently bought a few bits from a few different places; Rival, Northern and Factory Weights. Northern were the best price for cast iron plates. Check delivery costs, varies massively. Also check for discount codes, I think I used LIFTFROMHOME for Northern. Factory have a shop in Glasgow. Few others that spring to mind are Mirafit again, Strength Shop, Primal.

Second hand is good, Facebook has loads, but generally it's gonna be collection only so needs to be local.

And don't wear gloves, you'll be laughed at. Even training alone at home, somebody, somewhere will be laughing at you.

Not if you wear tracksuit trousers with two stripes down them and a vest one size too small. And a 'tache.
