When did colds and sniffles evolve to have that really nasty cough at the tail end that takes ages to clear and makes all the muscles around your ribcage hurt so much?

If anyone has a quick fix i'm all ears...

I’ve had this for years now. I hardly ever have a cold mind, but the persistent silly cough lasts weeks when the cold maybe lasts 3 days at most. So bloody annoying.
