Not sure if this is the correct space. Admins move if required.

My dad recently had a stroke and after returning home we have had one of these monitored alarms put in Incase he falls.

So far there have been a couple of issues. He keeps setting off the fall sensing pendent as it seems very sensitive, even rolling over in bed.

Secondly he has accidentally set off the push button on his wrist (none fall sensing device).

The monitoring place are threatening to remove him from the service due to the number of false activations or bill him an extortionate amount for every false activation.

He is quite deaf so even when they try checking if he is ok he can’t hear the speaker (it’s two feet away and very loud, don’t mention hearing aids it’s the bain of my life). This invariably ends up with them calling me and me calling extended family as I don’t live close to my dad and asking them to physically check he is alright. Ok during the day but people are getting pissed off at getting up in the middle of the night.

To help mitigate this I have fitted the internet and internal cameras everywhere apart from the bathroom and bedroom in his house with remote access on my phone.

Currently we are paying the monitoring company, who are less than helpful when he sets off the alarm and I invariably end up sorting any problems. When his catheter blocked they didn’t do anything other than ring me to sort it all. Surely they could have rang a district nurse. It’s a council run alarm system.

Quite frankly my dad and I are getting royally pissed of with the monitoring system. There threats and costs are causing my dad concern and he wants rid of the system and has now got to the point he won’t wear the fall detection pendant.

So to my question

Is there anything that will just work through his internet and call me or alert me. Some sort of wearable push button (simple to operate as he can’t even send a text message) that will contact me.

In effect cut out the monitoring company (who only call me anyway) and let me know he has pressed his emergency button.

We had this service for 4 years for my 96 yo Dad, only used it once, he was angry about the cost

We ditched it in favour of an Apple watch and iphone

The watch has a fall detection and ability to press the button.

It calls the emergency services and 3 numbers

Seems to work well

Thanks but an Apple Watch is way beyond him. He wouldn’t even remember to charge it.

I’m looking for something with really a simple push button that if he pressed it then it would message / call me and perhaps my brother or another number that could perhaps go a week without charging as I visit every week.

I’ve searched the internet and can’t believe I can’t find something off the shelf that does this. Even if it had a subscription cost to it I wouldn’t mind.

I’m just fed up with the monitoring company, keep threatening to bill him £10 an activation. Then they insist that he has to activate it once a month to test it. He just hates technology. Even the microwave is complex for him. He still buys a tv guide as he can’t work the tv guide menu on the tv and enters channel numbers manually. He’s just has / had no want or desire to learn anything about technology.

Problem is when they call him (through the monitoring hub) he doesn’t hear it, so the service just call me constantly. Like I said cameras have helped. There just must be a better solution.

Put a massive speaker amp on the monitor thing and maybe get a flashing light that can be triggered when they ring to check him.

Would something like this do the job?
https://personalalarms.org/products/suresafego-fam...

Looks like it cuts out the monitoring contract and just rings you when he presses the button or falls over.
I'm searching for something like it for my mum at the moment

This website might be helpful.

About 10 years ago, I was a supplier in this market and found Frances Leckie to be great to work with.

We have a monitoring service and pay for the warden call out. Can't recall which company it is, offhand but my mother is aklso deaf and has been awoken in the middle of the night on several occasions with a torch in her eyes.

A few false activations but they cope with it and don't complain.

My dad is 94. I got a notification the other day from his Apple Watch saying he'd taken a fall.

Rang him immediately and he told me he'd drank a bit to much red wine and didn't realise how pissed he was until he got up to go to bed.

Hopefully those quality genes have been passed on to me.

Another vote for an apple watch, my mother in law has been saved by hers a few times by calling numbers automatically when she has fallen and she is definitely a technophobe - all she has to do is charge and wear it.

We used to sell a lot of these -

https://www.bellman.com/en/products/alerting-produ...

although they are not really going to alert you, more just the person wearing them.

If the issue is that it’s a council run service, go with a private provider that doesn’t care how many times the button is pushed unnecessarily.

Thanks for this, whilst not exactly what i was looking for it did lead me to this product on their website. Doesnt require a monitoring service and can be set up just to contact me from reading the website, i have contacted them and am awaiting a response that it can be set up without a monitoring contract.

Im always amazed by the PH community when you reach out for advice and guidance on important matters.
