Hi,
Bit of a long one.
I’m 41 in good health, don’t smoke, do drugs and barely drink and exercise consistently 3 times a week and generally feel physically well considering I have a manual physical job as well.
Life is quite stressful at the minute with my business and my mums health and sometimes it all becomes too much and I feel completely overwhelmed. This can result in me not sleeping a wink all night, now this doesn’t happen very often maybe once every 8-10 weeks. I’ve been doing some ATT Metacognitive Brain Training to try and help with this and try and do some meditation.
I’ve never tried any sort of recreational drug at all in my life, dull I know, however I keep seeing that people rave about CBD oil and I was wondering if anyone had any experience and what there opinions would be about it’s effectiveness when I’m having one of my overwhelmed nights and need some help to relax and empty my head to get off too sleep. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Before turning straight to medication, there are lots of things you can do to try and help sleep. A few I've done over the years:
1. Write a list of what is bothering you - lists help plus your body gets annoyed at you stopping trying to sleep so can make it easier over time
2. Similar to 1, get up for 10-15 mins, your mind/body will again start getting annoyed at this
3. Relaxation techniques - lots out there, find what works for you- have a w@nk; relax all muscles starting at feet; intake breath then hold, then relax etc etc
4. avoid stimulation just before bed, i.e. checking phone, playing games, action films etc, your mind will be flooded thinking about them
5. Check when you are drinking coffee - i.e. make sure enough time for your system to stabilise before bed.
6. Don't have a TV in bedroom - train your mind bed is for sleepy time.
HTH.

Must admit that I bought some Melatonin when I was in the US. No prescription needed, it's on the shelf at Walgreens.
I tend to take one after two consecutive nights of sleeping.
I do find listening to audiobooks or podcasts helps with sleeping too.
I tried cannabis oil for pain and it was useless.

TBH, I found CBD to be a snake oil, for me anyway, it was a massive thing a few years ago but the fad wagon moved on. I think Magnesium is the latest fix-all thing which includes sleep. I might sound pretty negative, I'm sure it works for some people, but I don't think it works for nearly as many people as it claims to.
As for the other stated benefits, I found Omega 3 fish oil works better for me, easier to find and better evidence to support it.
I'm not a great sleeper myself, and I'm living under some pretty extreme pressure at the moment, yoga and good 'sleep hygiene' works for me, as does background noise. I use a fan, which helps with me being constantly too warm in bed too. I have ADHD which doesn't make sleeping easy.

Following with interest as someone that doesn't drink or "drug" and desperately needs to chill out.
I thought CBD might be answer but I've yet to find anything that has any noticeable impact on me, admittedly my sample size if fairly limited to drinks, gummies and "drops" but they've all has less effect on my spirits than the rush you get from a hot sauce or the temporary mood spike from a naughty cake.

OP I have similar, every now and again, usually when I know I have to be up and out extra early in the morning. Is there any chance that you are actually getting some sleep? I find I'm generally not absolutely shattered in the morning after it happens, led me to read about False Awakenings and it made a lot of sense for me.
Re CBD I looked into it and couldn't find a decent dose without spending a fortune. As above I try to put on a fairly relaxed pod-cast and hope I drift off OK, if not I know I'm in for a rough night but try not to worry about it and at least relax.

The real thing (cannabis) is a huge stress reliever. Proven time after time after time.
I'm not sold on CBD only though I'm afraid. Always seems to me to be akin to a burger without the meat.
Probably not the answer you're looking for, but there it is.

Haven't really bothered with anything for years now, but the combination of getting a hardly used Storz & Bickel Mighty vaporiser from a friend and finding THCA legally sold in the UK online has given me a little treat for the weekends. No smoke and no smell.

I'm currently suffering with a bit of anxiety and have tried Kalms once per night and the Trip CBD drops along with magnesium (combination of them all) and I'll be honest I'm not sure any of them really do the job.
Biggest thing is stop the doom scrolling, I've switched to reading books on my kindle which is better to get you prepped for sleep.

I've used cannabis successfully in the past for stress. However, The danger is always that it slips into chronic use. The harms are much more clearly documented for daily users, I do believe.
Also, I think cannabis can mask the underlying root cause, If you're ruminating at night, then there is probably a cause that is better treated with therapy. What is it you are ruminating about?
Cannabis can be detrimental to REM sleep. Also, there is some disturbing new research into vascular impact of regular cannabis use, which should be of interest to anyone with any cardiac risk factors.
That all said, if, and it's a big if, you are in a position to enjoy the drug safely then it's a very pleasurable way to go to sleep.

I'd never heard of THCA before, having googled it though, it certainly seems like it'd be a better bet than the CBD oils and the like for what the OP wants it for.

I think if you use the vape we're talking about just above this quote, that for me offers quite a safe usage method, since the dose can be carefully controlled via dosing capsules (I consume roughly 0.1g per night, about 1/10ths of the amount most people put into a joint), and as a result, I get the benefits without any massive side effects since I'm using so little of it. The dry mouth is still a bit annoying though. Also, I think cannabis can mask the underlying root cause, If you're ruminating at night, then there is probably a cause that is better treated with therapy. I hear you on the chronic use thing though. You have to be sure you will use it responsibly, bit like with alcohol I guess. I wouldn't encourage anyone to start using it if they don't already, but for the purpose of stress relief, used in moderation, I don't think it can be beaten.

I mean generally I’m a very good sleeper, the stresses aren’t anything major, my mum is in the early stages of dementia but she’s managing and she’s just around the corner. I run 2 construction companies which isn’t easy but not horrendous and just have periods of anxiety and worry about anyone of those 2 things and it just stops me sleeping. I’ve had some therapy which has helped understand it all and I think I just have to accept that every once in a while I won’t sleep a night. My therapist says not to be concerned as it’s so infrequent, he says to embrace it and if I can’t sleep make use of that time by doing something enjoyable. I think it’s often knowing that you aren’t going to sleep makes it worse, he just says what the worst thing about that? You’ll just be tired the next day, which is true and really not the end of the world. Sleep deprivation can be quite harmful to health. I wouldn't underestimate the significance of going a night without sleep.
I would concentrate on breaking the rumination cycle. It's probably not just in bed that you have these thoughts. I would start with an audiobook on a 15 minute timer, perhaps a book that you've read before, or a book with some technical detail. You just need to break that cycle where you ruminate over and over again.
It's looking more likely that regardless of delivery, there is some harm associated with the cannabinoid receptors THC binds to.
Moderation is not just a quantity issue, it's a frequency issue too. There's potential for a persistent low grade stress on the body that does a different kind of harm. I wouldn't be worried about occasional use. But even moderate amounts used daily can compound the harms, I do believe. You never really give your system a reset.
It's all relative though, you could do a lot worse. And research is often low quality. But sadly the research is drifting in the 'wrong' direction for me
If you're the kind of person who can just do it occasionally, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. If there's any possibility of you slipping into chronic daily use, I would advise against it.
