Just tried to renew my Post Office travel insurance. Went through the online quiz based on 'no changes' and was quoted £258pa.
I then went through it again, this time ticking the box to indicate a change in medical circumstances that came about earlier this year, to whit the prescription of statins to fix a high cholesterol reading.
The statins immediately brought my score down to normal levels, as advertised, but admitting to them has also increased PO's premium quote from £258pa to £385pa. This seems a bit mad as I no longer have high cholesterol thanks to the statins.
Predictably there is no way to tell the quiz about statins. This (non) condition has now been saved on the PO site, which of course won’t let me go back to the first quote. PO customer service bod on the phone said there was nowt they could do about it so I’m now wondering what to do next.
Looking for an alternative provider and keeping schtum about the statins seems like the most obvious plan. Upgrading my bank account to one that includes free insurance might be an option but outside of that any suggestions as to good value providers would be very gratefully received.
I expect to be scolded for virtual dishonesty and have accordingly shoved an exercise book down the back of my trousers.
Thank you.

No need to be dishonest. You'd be on a hiding to nothing anyway - you want cover that pays out, don't you?!

Speak to one of the outfits that is used to dealing with that sort of thing, rather than generic Post Office cover.

All Clear is the one that immediately springs to mind. But there's a whole bunch here;

I use Puffin Insurance. Never had to claim so no idea whether they’re any good or not…

My bank had been covering my health abroad along with breakdown cover and mobile phone insurance for decades at only £15 a month.

Didn't even go up when I told them about my heart attack in 2009.

But they stopped it for everyone in the Summer and I had trouble getting quotes elsewhere, especially once medications for a heart attack 17 years ago were taken into account.

Saga did quote £185 though and Aviva, who insure my car, got my business at £110.

Thank you very much, I’ll take a squint at that.
I’m an honest geezer but a 50% hike for revealing I’ve been cured of a condition seemed a bit OTT.

Could you quickly go on a trip, lose your wallet and let me know how it went? wink

Yes my inquiries are revealing a general withdrawal of providers in the travel insurance market, presumably because of the number of lovely folk who routinely add ‘claims’ to their holiday experience.

Well, you haven’t been cured. It’s controlled by the statin.

But normally I didn’t think travel insurance loaded for things like this - even controlled high blood pressure, asthma etc.

We use a policy through Civil Service pensions (but I’ve seen it offered elsewhere) that doesn’t need any medical declaration.

Tongue in cheek about the 'cure’, it’s hardly a life-threatening condition though especially when it’s been brought back to normal levels by statins. I'm not a big lardy dude, I’d go as far as saying I'm pretty fit for my (apparently advanced) age, golf + tennis 2/3 times a week on average through the year but none of that is considered by The Computer. High cholesterol is/was a hereditary thing.

You may find my past post about insurance helpful. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Lots of different recommendations on there. We ended up using "Insurancewith", for a price that was significantly cheaper than I was expecting. My son (who the insurance is for) has some tough health issues and his annual insurance policy is significantly less than what you've been quoted.

As for keeping quiet, don't do it. There's no point having insurance if they won't pay out when you need them.

No, but the heart attack or stroke you might have on holiday won’t exactly thrill your insurer.

Sorry if I’m missing something but if taking statins is your only issue, why not just trawl the comparison sites?

It's to try and avoid getting bombarded with unwanted offers resulting from me putting all my personal info out there. It would be great if they would just give you a rough ballpark figure up front without demanding all that but it looks like nobody is prepared to do it.

After being messed around with another insurance company due to "complications" with an additional antiseizure drug (Brain Tumour..) I got a very competitive quote from Goodtogo insurance. Very good service, although I didn't actually have to make a claim fortunately.. Would certainly use them again for my next trip

I have a separate email account for anything marketing or quote related. Works well and means my main account is reserved for important stuff.

If you are able to get quotes via the comparison sites then that will be far far easier than speaking to a specialist medical provider who will literally want your entire medical history - a single quote for my son took up to an hour per insurer. Comparison sites will likely be cheaper too.

I will gird my loins, or whatever the modern day personal info equivalent of that is, and give it a go.

Hi Craig, I’ve read your thread with admiration, hope you are soldiering on OK, thanks for this suggestion.

Not too much to add, but the further in advance you book it has made a difference for me in the past.
I did have an informal diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome (sticky blood) after 10 clots and the last one being while taking apixaban. I was quoted £260 for a 1 week trip to Barbados (I also have Sarcoidosis and Bipolar) with single trip cover.
Helpfully, my doctor yesterday let me know that a blood test I had 12 months ago had ruled out the antiphospholipid diagnosis (long story)......the new quote was £33 after answering all questions honestly. I've had the clots, but there is no diagnosed condition and nowhere on the forms did it ask about a history of DVT. Crazy how much of a difference certain conditions make.

Interesting thanks, this is kind of why I’m feeling a bit narked about the PO quote process which, having drawn you down a road that you think will give you an illustrative quote then won’t let you back out again.
