A tooth has just fallen out of my mouth - more specifically a crown I that was originally fitted 20 years ago.........OK, no big deal I thought, I can have it re-fitted, but hang on a minute, what's that filling doing there?

Would it be common pracice to fill a crown?......I would have thought they were impervious of decay - have I been ripped off by a dodgy dentist somewhere along the line?

If the crown had been root treated then the root should be filled with white filling. This is what happened to one of my teeth.

Obviously you have been ripped off, because us dentists are all crooked.

I would try and find the thieving scum bag that did the crown 20 years ago... he will probably be sunning himself on the Costa del sol, laughing at the mug 20 years ago that he ripped off.

In reality, the tooth has probably been root treated after the crown was fitted and the access cavity filled with a metal filling. Perfectly normal and legitimate practice.

The crown has been filled very near the top with a standard silver coloured filling.......did I say that it had been filled by the original dentist?

Your sarcasm isn't doing dentists any favours in my view......quite the opposite in fact.

I think the point is that the crown lasted 20 years. I think they usually have a life expectancy of 15 years before you have problems with them. That means you've had more than your money's worth from it. So the dentist isn''t exactly raping you for money, is he?

BTW I'm not a dentist or anything related. I will be happy if my dental work lasts 20 years before I need a replacement.

Mine told me 5 years, Maximum. Thats £600 a crown, for 5 years? So assuming I live another 50 years (fingers crossed) I'll need to spend £6k per crown - ignoring inflation!

had a crown fall off about 7 years ago. It took me 5 mins to stick it back on with a couple of drops of superglue and hasn't budges since. If I had gone into the dentist, I would have been charged at least £40 for the privilege. Had many checkups since then and all is well smile

It's about time the worm turned.

Us dentists get nothing but abuse from the public. Everyones first thought is that "we" have done something inproper.

I have every confidence that it is your memeory (over the last 20 years) of events around this crown that is at fault.

And incase you were wondering, I am having a bad day already!

I think the OP is trying to tell us that he has a crown which has been filled like a damaged tooth through being rotten, but has been scammed as a crown shouldn't need a filling.

6k?! I'd have it removed and drink yoghurt for the rest of my days if that was the cost!

Update - visited the dentist today & was told that part of the tooth attached to & underneath the crown had snapped off, more than likely due to excesive contact during Aikido training last monday rolleyes

I've been given a temporary filling & I'll be having the root canal done or at least started next monday.
