As the title says. I've Googled and loads come up, so it will be a trawl to find one with the facilities I want, so I thought I'd see if there are any Bournemouth-ites on here first.

After a working gym with free weights, Olympic bars, squat rack...you know the sort of thing.

Any suggestions? Cheap and cheerful is fine; not after David LLoyd and pamper just workout facilities.

TIA

Roko in Kinson was pretty good, but its been sold to the council. In the middle between Bournemouth and Verwood too.

newspaper article

That would imply the fees are much lower now though. Had a half decent free weights area, can't remember if it had a squat rack though. Definitely had 2-3 benches and a couple of smith cages tho.

I'm a member at Roko/ the now Pelhams sports centre, its actually quite good and is having 2million invested by the council over the next year (bigger swimming pool). Prices have actually gone down a bit since they took over and I pay 39 quid a month. The gym is well equipped but tends to suffer from taking ages to get anything fixed thats not working (read by that at least 10% of the fitlinx terminals). Parking is also a pain during the winter due to the adjoining football club (especially as they dont pay membership yet use the car park). Its mainly aimed at people wanting CV equipment and fitness classess and only has a small feee weights area.

The Village by Bournemouth hospital?
Fitness First up at Queens Park?
Personally I find all the big ones rammed and largely full of dheads and massive egos. I go to a small one that is part of a hotel in Bournemouth and have the place to myself most evenings.

I need free weights; I want to start doing proper strength exercises again, so deadlifts, squats, non-smith machine bench press.

NOT heavy weights as I'm a weedy bugger, but just proper total strength compound exercises. Does your gym have decent free weights? It all seems to be bloody health and safety and frightened of people hurting themselves now... frown

Shorefield at St leonards on the A31 has a gym membership option.
When I joined about 4-5years ago the place was dead. Nowadays, it is a lot busier but it has free weights and is still pretty quiet during the day.
Lacks a bit of space though
