Dodgy curry takeaway at the weekend, & all week my guts have been upset, with a particularly expolsive result at the very regular toilet visits biggrin

My mrs reckons i should starve it out, as she had something similar a while back.

I have been told therefore, to go without food for 36hours, drinking warmish water only.

Does this sound right???

NHS direct suggests...

  • Make sure you have plenty to drink to avoid becoming dehydrated (losing too many fluids and salts from the body). Even if you have been vomiting (being sick) or don't feel like drinking, you should try to take small, frequent sips of water or diluted fruit juice.
  • If you are worried that you are becoming dehydrated, you may like to try special rehydration drinks. You can buy these in sachets from your local pharmacist and add them to water. Always follow the dosage instructions on the packet. Rehydration drinks provide the correct balance of essential minerals. They do not help to cure diarrhoea, but are ideal to prevent or treat dehydration.
  • Avoid alcohol as it will make you more dehydrated.
Avoid sports drinks, sugary drinks, or drinks that contain sugar substitutes (such as aspartame), as these may make your diarrhoea worse.

  • Don't eat any food if you are feeling sick or vomiting. Rest your stomach for one hour after being sick - then try small sips of water. You should only try eating again once you have been free of vomiting for several hours. Avoid greasy or spicy foods.
  • Anti-diarrhoea medicines can reduce the number of times you need to go to the toilet. You can buy anti-diarrhoea medicines from your local pharmacy. However, you should check with your pharmacist before using one.
Severe diarrhoea and vomiting can make the oral contraceptive pill, and the emergency contraceptive pill less effective. If you are taking the oral contraceptive pill, you should use an extra method of contraception (such as a condom) if you are sexually active during this time. You will need to continue to use a condom for seven days after your diarrhoea has stopped, to avoid the risk of pregnancy. Read the information in the pill packet for more advice. Call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 if you are still worried.

  • In most cases, mild diarrhoea is caused by a mild viral or bacterial infection. Maintaining a good standard of hygiene can help stop germs from spreading to others. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, particularly before preparing food and after going to the toilet.
  • Don’t share personal items, such as towels, flannels or face cloths. These items should be washed regularly at 60 degrees centigrade.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who might have a weakened immune system, such as the elderly, newborn babies, people with cancer or HIV/AIDS, or those having steroid or chemotherapy treatment.
  • It is recommended that you stay away from work until 48 hours (2 days) after your symptoms have disappeared, to prevent you from spreading any infection you may have.

When I had gastric flu a couple of years ago the Doctor recommended drinking a pint of squash with a couple of pinches of salt in it.

Probably deyhdration...

Try rich tea biscuits (or something plain like toast).

Avoid dairy products (milk, cheese and butter) until you start to feel better. I have a tiny amount of milk in my tea (almost black) and even that kept turning my stomach.

Sounds like a quicky 'isotonic' drink for rehydration - the right salt/sugar balance is more quickly absorbed. You can do a bit better with proper fruit juice and water (1:3 ish), but the amount of salt required is so small I doubt you'd miss it.

OP- don't add starvation to your woes. Eat something bland.

Any traditional English dish should do! </Goodness Gracious Me>

If it's really bad and you can't even keep water in then sucking ice cubes is a good way to keep hydrated without going to the toilet every minute.

A nice salmonella laced curry taught me that a few years ago. The curry house was shut down quicker than my bowels (by at least a week!).

Nooooooooooooooo. The worst thing you can do is make all the st stay in you - it's trying to get out for a reason.

Yep but the starfish can only take so much movement before it becomes more torn than a torn thing...

I did like the bit in the NHS thing that says that the pill can become less effective if you are having food poisoning, like you would be trying it on with someone who is in that state....

'yes thats it dear just lie there whilst I try to stick this....'

WTF... Urrrggghhh noooo.... fizzy gravy explosion.... run away!!

When my FiL was working in China he got turboskitters and swore that full fat coke with a pinch of salt kept him alive.

shake the coke flat.

I had 8 weeks of Dehli-Belly when I was in Dehli, punctuated by a really bad week of amoebic dysentry mid way through my indian travels when I reached Goa.

At one point I was out shopping for some new sunglasses in Goa, and at the shop counter with a prospective purchase decided to risk it and squeak out a fart.

It was not a fart.

Feel sorry for you. I had food poisoning from a dodgy chicken sandwich.

Did not know if I should sit on the toilet or hang over it.

Got so bad, wife returned and called the paramedic who called the Ambulance. They were going to take me in but did not have any nappies on board (sad or what) - I think the real truth was that they did not want me contaminating their Ambulance.

Lost a stone and a half in a very short space of time. The Doctor suggested if I did not keep throwing up that I should have an injection to stop it.

When it happened to me in Madras, I lived on milkshakes for 2 weeks. I felt quite proud when I graduated to soup smile.

The worst irony though was it was a subway and not a curry.

That's not food poisoning. Real food poisoning is alternating between being sick and crapping, depending on split second decisions as to which has more priority, with brief breaks to lie in a ball on the bathroom floor while your guts are causing you so much pain that you feel like crying.

I've been there and it isn't pleasant. I was uncontrolably projectile vomiting bile at the drop of a hat and struggling to keep water down.

You know when you have proper food poisoning becuase the thought of food or eating doesn't even cross your mind...
