I have Achalasia, I had th heller's cardiomyotomy with fundoplication a year ago preformed at the royal surrey and guildford.
It all started for me sometime early 2011 when i started to realise i couldn't drink lying down, it never dawned on me that anything was wrong till early 2012 when i started bringing up food, having the severe chest pains and bringing up the froth. I still wasn't sure that anything was wrong because it had all been so gradual but i finally decided to go out to the Drs when i took my mum out for lunch on mothers day 2012 and didn't manage to swallow one bite. Every mouthfull i took i had to run to the toilet to bring it up. i went to see the Dr the following week where i was given Omeprazol (i think) because she thought i had scarring of the throat due to acid reflux, i started taking the pills but quickly realised that i was bringing up the shells of the pills an hour or 2 later. Since my Drs is in my local hospital there are about 10 Drs there, none of them could work out what was wrong with me. In this time i had gone from 12.5 stone down to 9 , so being 6'2" i looked quite ill, eventually i decided to see an upper gastro intestinal specialist who after explaining my symptoms gave me an endoscopy and booked me in for a barium swallow, after having that i was booked in for a manometry which is when i first heard the word acahlasia.
The specialist recomended that i have the operation due to my age (28 at the time) and said he would onlt have the operation done by the 2 surgeons at the Royal Surrey. After much waiting i was told that a slot had opened up and i could have the operation done at the end of November 2012 i just had to get a second manometry done
i had this done and a week later was on the table. By the time i had left hospital i was just under 8st and looked very ill (some people who didn't really know me thought i was on hard drugs).
A year later i'm back up to 10st, i have to eat slowly with plenty of water, have the occasional chest pains and regular acid reflux during the night but this is so much better then it was before.

Thank you for your reply... It was 2009 when I posted the question and so far you are the only one to comment.. Since then my wifes condition like yours deteriorated, but now she is much better. She has not had an operation but has regular Botox injections on the muscles in her esophogus which sem to control the condition. Her consultant has said that as long as the botox works to stick to that until the operation becomes really nescesary.
