I have been meaning to do it for a while but I just heard an advert on the radio which reminded me. I have never needed an organ but I would like to think there would be one there if I needed it. I cant expect anybody to donate an organ without registering myself so I just did.

Anyway here is the link - https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ukt/default.jsp

Takes about 2 minutes, put in your details and it links up to your NHS Number.

There are plenty of music shops around which sell instruments, but hardly any have organs. Pianos are much more popular.

I'm a bit iffy about being "butchered". Just one of those things.

I would just like to say thank you to all those who are registered as without you I will struggle for my next kidney. If you are O+ take it easy on the booze and drugs please.

Been registered since I turned 16. The only thing that I refuse to let them have is my corneas, I don't want anyone touching my eyes even if I am dead.

In that case, would you refuse an organ if you required one? Not having a go, just trying to understand the thought process...

To be fair, it's not something i've considered. Will read more into it.

Organ demand far exceeds supply, I know that much.

Same here, the rest of me they are welcome to, for me I think it's psychological in that I still want to be "complete" from the outside when they bury me.

Surely they don't bury people with their eyes open!! From the outside you will look the same with or without your corneas.

When I pop my clogs they are welcome to whatever they can salvage.

I know it's daft but I just feel that way, no real idea why. Once I'm gone though if my family are happy for them to go they can take them, I won't be too fussed.

I would like to reassure people that organ donation (including eyes) does not prevent your family coming to visit your body or having an open coffin.
I have worked in the funeral trade for a number of years and have never had a problem preparing someone for the chapel of rest because they had chosen to donate their organs.

There doesn't seem to me much 'worry' about the donation of internal organs as no one can see the difference. People mainly feel uneasy, as seen on here, about donating their eyes or even their skin.
If skin is to be donated only a thin layer is taken from the back, or legs, of the person. This is no thicker than the skin over a blister and the area will be covered with a bandage. As the person would be clothed in the coffin none of this will be visable to visiting family.
If someones corneas / eyes have been donated, the funeral directors will be able to insert an artificial eye and close the eyelid as normal. Any visiting family should not be able to tell the difference.

If you do register, you could help prevent the death of someone elses loved one.

Thank you.

Huge huge shame if you don't donate your corneas. Theres a big shortage of tissue at the moment. I operate on people to replace their corneas, and the difference it makes for those people is incredible. It really is a case of giving sight back to someone that is blind.

Harvesting cornea is no different to any other organ in the body, and once your dead, you are in no need of it so please reconsider, because there are people that really need this tissue to lead their lives.

I've been on the donor register for as long as I remember, always told my mum when I was a child they could have my organs...I was a strange child obsessed with death!
I like the recent lot of adverts as most people would take an organ in a heartbeat but so many wouldn't donate.

I agree with the "opt out" organ donation and maybe if you do opt out you then drop right down the list should you need one yourself.

I've been on the organ donation register for as long as I can remember as well. I also want whatever is left over from organ donation to go to medical science use at the Newcastle University Medical School.
