Anyone had this procedure done?

When I was 18 (more than 20 years ago!) I badly sprained my ankle thinking I had broken it, luckliy just stretched ligaments very badly. Have sprained the same ankle about 20-30 times since as the ligaments have now stretched and cannot stabilise the ankle too well (if at all).

I have twisted said ankle 3 times in the last few weeks and am getting frustrated by it. I have to concentrate when walking down the pavement as any slight surface imperfection can trigger yet another twist. Had an MRI scan a few weeks ago and will go and see consultant (NHS) next Tuesday (27th) to discuss options.

I am very very wary of having any invasive surgery but if someone told me that they could almost guarantee to improve the stability of the ankle through surgery and and allow me to feel more confident in it for things like street running etc I may consider surgery.

Oh yes I have done all the stability exercises which help but obviously once you have stretched the ligaments as much as have been there is only so much physio can accomplish.

So back to my question! Anyone undergone a Brostrum repair. Was chatting with someone at the gym and apparently Simon Moyes appears to be one of the UK exponents of this procedure.

Do this. Find a consultant who specialises in foot and ankle not a generalist.

I've done about 10 modified Bostrum-Gould repairs, they work well when done for the right reasons in the right patient.

Thanks Doc. It appears as though the repair might help me in my situation as it looks like one, maybe two of the three main ligaments have been affected (torn/sprained). I am pondering whether to have the surgery. Just the thought of being out of action for a couple of months is distinctly off-putting, being the semi-obsessive Gym Junkie that I am!!

Doc? You still about? I am going in for surgery in the autumn as I don't want to be incapacitated during summer months although I have an option for a May operation! I'm aware 12 weeks is the approximate recovery period. I am a healthy 42 year old. I know that I would have an initial 2 weeks non weight-bearing At what stage during the 12 weeks approximately can I (for example) go for longish walks? Roughly.

You are going to have to ask your surgeon this. Sorry.
Or better still speak to the physio team he works with.
