I train about an hour after getting up in the morning, with weights.

Any suggestions as to how I can get the best performance.
I usually have a low cal caffeine energy drink.
Sometimes I feel good and have a great session but I'm struggling lately.
Any tricks or tips?

Is that all you have pre-workout?

You'll need more carbs to fuel the session, especially if you're doing weight training.

Have a banana or two, it will keep you sustained during your whole workout.

Do sometimes have a fruit drink/smoothie but don't feel much more settles properly.
Could prob do a banana though.
I usually have one after with my shake.
I've got used to training first thing although other lads at gym say they couldn't do it.
Just lately( today included) struggling for that extra push.

I'm similar. Up at 04:50, in the gym by 06:00. Occasionally I'll do an evening cardio session too.

Perhaps you need a break? Best to have a week off every 6 - 8 weeks of training to shake things up and let your body recover. I tend to find I'll need a 4 or 5 day break every so often and I'll judge this by my performance in the gym.

Go on, kick back for a few days and have an extra hour in bed. I bet you'll feel the difference.

This is the thing..you must have adequate fuel before the session to make it worthwhile

and to prevent hunger after, which might make you overdo the calories.

Which means something like a large banana about an hour before you train. It will absorb

slower than a smoothie.Means you might have to rise a bit earlier!

If you can avoid shakes altogether and have proper food,if it's convenient.

I usually get up at 04:15 and at the gym for 05:10. I normally have a Creapump from MP: http://www.myprotein.co.uk/products/creapump with a banana.

It certainly wakes me up and gives me the energy I need. I also make sure I have a good meal the night before.

Not sure of the validity, but I recently read somewhere that it may be unsafe to put too much strain on the back within an hour of rising... something about hydration or lack of in the spine. I'll see if I can find the source...
