I need some PH wisdom on how to de-stress properly. I usually take the infamous mantra of 'keep calm and carry on', but I am still finding myself wound up most of the time. (i.e. arguing with internet morons and letting it get to me hehe, impatience with idiots in general, massive knots in my neck all the time etc) I have been told by my doc that I don't breathe properly due to stress and it is starting to cause me health issues as well.

So I have started Thai Chi, and also looking at meditation classes and I try and do the usual like watch movies and read but I can't seem to concentrate long for that. I don't really watch TV and I guess my only relaxing thing I do is surfing the net but that isn't destressing at all. A little part of me wants to start smoking again too? I shouldn't should I?

So help, what do you do to de-stress?

Just realise yer life would be no worse if most of the rest of the UK died tomorrow.

Be a mysanthrope. Keeps me sane.

And fags are good smile

I don't think mysanthropeness is the answer, I quite like most people really. And even if I didn't I still need to destress from them.

So will go with the fags laugh thanks.

Mushroom hunting.

(Or 'hunting' in general I suspect.)

I find getting out into the woods, with no information to process - other than that which is immediately available to your senses - to be the perfect antidote to modern, stressy life.

I can lose myself for hours out there (and hopefully return with something tasty to eat).

Exercise (preferably outdoor) away from any form of human civilisation.

I like the idea of hunting, am thinking something more annoying than mushrooms though. hehe

I guess it is a destressing hobbie I need, my current hobbies are expensive and frustrate me.

Exercise, and a sauna. It's impossible to be angry at life when you're in a sauna.

Put the song 'Float on' by Modest Mouse on your stereo very loud, listen to every single word, and enjoy!
Works every time for me smile

Need to find the source of the stress and either get it out of your life, or if thats not possible work out a way to deal with it where it's not consuming your thoughts smile

Keep practising tai chi if you've started classes. Concentrating on the movements will mean your mind can't be occupied by whatever is stressing you out when you're given time to think and let the thoughts spiral out of control.

I find walking the dog, on my own, no wife, no kids, no phone, up the forest or somewhere nice really de-stresses me. I think you should be able to rent a dog if you don't have one!

If I am wound so tight I can't get to sleep I find listening to a dull podcast on my Ipod quietly sends me right off into a deep and dreamless sleep.

Coast and Country or Excess Baggage work very well for this purpose, and I wake with a strange knolwedge of canals in Hungary, or something like that.

Find something to do that absorbs 100% of your concentration. For me its sailing and riding motorbikes; I absolutely cannot think about anything else other than those things when I'm doing them.

I also find cycling to and from work gives me a great opportunity to order my thoughts into/out of work mode at the beginning & end of the day
