Any remedies for getting rid before resigning myself to prescription drugs?

Roll a gold ring over it for a while, old wifes tale but it seems to work for most people.

grate potato onto a cotton wool pad and make an eyepatch with it. no idea of the thinking behind it (mum wisdom) but worked for me.

Cross yourself three times next time you see a black cat,then slap a bald bloke hard on top of the head,whilst shouting 'take it Nigel'

Bathe the sty regularly with cotton wool dipped in a bowl of hot water from the kettle with a dash of Dettol in it.
The heat will encourage the infection to the surface.

If it's very obviously in the follicle of an eyelash, try pulling the lash out to let it drain.

Wouldn't want Dettol anywhere near an eye but boiled water with a teaspoon of salt (aim for about as salty tasting as tears), on a compress as hot as you can bear should help.

Unless it's unbelievably painful, really swollen or causing some other problem I probably wouldn't bother taking it to a doctor - PP's suggestion of a pharmacist is a good one.

Used to get them all the time (we it seemed like it!) when a kid. Hot, salty, water, as mentioned above, usually got the problem sorted.

I had one years ago and the doc prescribed Hydrocortisone cream, I am pretty sure it was available OTC then, and certainly is now. Cleared up completely within a day or two.

This is about the nearest best advice!

Bathe the eye in cooled down boiled water and mix in a couple of drops of baby shampoo, clean around the lashes with the cotton bud with the mixture, then use a hot flannel over the lump for a few minutes before massaging it with your finger. you'll need to do this for some time. If it's red and sore you can get some antibiotic drops from the pharmacy, such as chloramphenicol, which might help a bit, or if the eyelid is swollen, get the GP to prescribe oral antibiotics.
