How long for swollen ankles and legs to go down ?

I have massively swollen ankles and legs.
Doctor says this is probably due to side effect of blood pressure medication and lowered daily dose plus given me a diruretic medication as well.
After a week went back to doctor as still as bad so they told me to stop taking original medication which is thought to have cause the problem and just take the diruretic.
Another 4 days later and ankles / legs just as bad.
Anyone tell me what sort of period could be considered as the normal time for any side effect of a medication to be eliminated after stopping taking the tablets ?
In my mind I should already be seeing an improvement.

I've had a similar reaction to antibiotics I was raking recently, in my case I've had a swollen knee with occasional ankle swelling.

I'm into my 3rd month with my knee which is slowly getting better, I did originally change tablets when it first happened but the damage was done
