I go to a gym with an excellent pool and for the last 4 weeks I have completely ditched the treadmill, weights etc and just swam at a decent pace for 45 mins around 5 times a week. I much prefer swimming than the rest of the gym. Is this good enough exercise to get fitter and lose weight?

Thanks

Yes. Absolutely but you might get bored flogging up and down the pool all the time.

Most things have got to be better than sitting on the couch watching TV. smile

Something somewhere at the back of my mind recalls that although swimming burns a lot of calories, be careful when you get out the water as your body is cooler which results in an impulse to eat... Happy to be disabused of that notion though.

My uninformed thoughts would be that it's probably one of the best all body sports, you have to be pretty much using all the major muscles and a lot of the stabilising ones keeping everything coordinated

Should really get back in the pool, haven't been for years...

i can't say for sure what the underlying scientific explanation is - but nothing makes me as famished as a decent swim!

I agree - I tried the gym for ages and didn't feel I was getting anywhere, swimming is much nicer.
In addition, on Sunday evening lane swimming I can pass an easy 30-40 minutes following the most awesome arse on a Polish girl who is in the pool as well.
