any dentists in the house?
Discussion
Hi guys,
after abit of advice really, on a recent hospital stay for 3 weeks I chipped my tooth quite badly somehow whilst out for the count, got it sorted once I got out and she did say at the time it was quite deep and filled it. now whilst drilling she kept hitting the nerve which hurt like hell and she must have done this 10 or so times.
Now the tooth has been REALLY sensitive since and also painful if i bite on something too hard, so went back to find the original dentist (who i was never too happy with, I only recently moved and joined with them.) is no longer working there and saw someone else who seemed much better, would not allow any more drilling once she hit the nerve and informed me I have one dead nerve and 1 still ok.
Now the thing is that she has recommended having root canal treatment which if I went private (which she recommended?) would be about £700 (I cant afford this plain and simple) or with them which will be about £300 with a crown afterwards.
the question is, I had no pain or sensitivity before the original filling, could she have made it worse? wondering why she left in the 1st place as everyone I speak to now didn't seem to like her. or is it just down to the original chip?
thanks
Jon

Better a late reply than never I guess.
Pretty obvious that you need a root canal (RCT). Original chip was likely due to the tooth being significantly weakened due to deep decay, sometimes no pain is experienced.
When a tooth is filled, all the dead infected tissue is removed and a filling placed. Sensitivity can occur as a result as before, the dead tissue was 'insulating' the nerve and now it isn't. Other scenario is that the nerve was on the cusp of dying and filling it tipped it over the edge. It would have happened anyway, so the filling is not to blame.
I'm a bit confused over the pricing. The £700 RCT is obviously private at that price, but so is the £300 RCT as NHS RCTs are £45.60?

ok well my appt was this morning. now she seems to have done the same kind of filling as before, some sort of protective layer then the filling, but spent a lot more time and seemed to do a much better job as I only had sensitivity issue. now the numbness seems to have worn off and seems a lot better so fingers crossed its worked this time, makes me wonder about the 1st filling job quality though? Owell nhs for ya!
the 300 was including the crown afterwards.
thanks for putting my mind at rest though that she didn't destroy my tooth before she got chucked out the practice lol

Sounds to me like someone wasn't too careful with the intubation...
ETA £700 for RCT?! Why oh why do I work in France?
£700 for an RCT is only justifiable by an endodontist, may have been what she meant.ETA £700 for RCT?! Why oh why do I work in France?

So you haven't had the RCT, just a filling and crown? Slightly confused because if the nerve is dead, as she told you, then it still needs an RCT.the 300 was including the crown afterwards.

And £300 still means you've been charged privately for something, maybe a white crown on a back tooth? RCT and crown (silver for back teeth, white for front) on the NHS is £198.
