Being a mental disorder, rather than an illness, it's sort of a spectrum from daydreamer, through scrote, and onto kids with really rather serious problems. The most serious cases would probably always have had extra help, but they represent a small number of children.

In the past the kids who daydream a lot would get shouted at, and the scrotes would get the cane. Given that teachers now can't do much of either, it's one of the few options left.

Daydreaming is a mental illness??? So that makes 50% of boys who are daydreaming about playing for England during a History lesson and 100% of girls who are dreaming about having Russell Howard's babies during the same History lesson. smile

No, it's bks. The school I went to in South Africa (selbornecollege.co.za) was based on disipline and team spirit and corporal punishment was dished out if necessary.

Strangley enough everyone got on and did their thing with none of this ADDH type crap.

Interesting. I wonder if the percentage of children suffering from similar symptoms is much lower in countries that don't mind children being caned.

It means that there is a lower percentage of children who decide to be rebellious and disruptive in countries where they know that caning is accepted as an efficient form of disipline as a last resort.

ETA Just to add that when school ended at 2.30 every day (started at 7.40) most would then go off to do Rugby, Rowing, swimming tennis etc for the next 3.5 hours untill 18.00. That in itself used up most excess energy.

I disagree , it is a recognised state and correct diagnosis and treatment can be incredibly helpful. HOWEVER there are too many parents who use it as a reason for their poor parenting skills and that includes setting boundaries for acceptable behaviour and discipline when necessary. It became a "me too" when parents saw children who to them were just poorly behaved becoming better after correct diagnosis and treatment and they decided that must be what their lovely child must be suffering from when the reality was very different , but with the growth in communication and "online" diagnosis it became easy for parents to falsely claim symptoms and even worse falsely get treatment Munchhausen syndrome effectively.

Giving them Ritalin is easier than giving them a work ethic...

unfortunately there will always be an element that will give this diagnosis a bad name.
ADHD is a very real disability. It is not caused by bad parenting and lies alongside some other autistic spectrum disorders.
All i can say is if you have no experience of this very stressful disabling condition then consider yourself very lucky indeed.

Mother to five two with Aspergers, one of whome also has ADHD.

Oh!!!!! and yes it really is very very real.
they cannot concentrate. they have no real attention span. they cannot stay on task. they have anger issues, they suffer from gross anxiety, they do not understand consequences or indeed what may happen if i do this. they have no stop and think button. so imagine how much trouble they can get into.......... then imagine that you have to parent that. Welcome to my world.

Absolutely. I believe that in rare cases there are variations of autism and this causes difficulty in perception/communication.

The vast majority IMO just need structure, disipline and physical exercise.

Slightly off topic, and far be it from me to ever want to associate myself with the cretin pedants who spend their pointless pathetic lives picking out every small error in order to jack off, but it is amazing how many people come on here with terrible spelling who pull the dyslexic card every time.

I don't ever remember there being that many dyslexic people around before, or are they just drawn to subsections of motoring forums like flies to the cowpat...

Might I ask why?
My step daughter recieves DLA, and my partner carers allowance as she had to quite work to look after her. My daughter suffers from ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and without 24/7 care is likely to harm (possibly fataly) herself or others around her.
She has no concept of emotion, or danger, is unable to perform what you and I would see to be relatively simple tasks, she suffers from severe short term memory issues. As an example if we are running the bath she will simply get in, if it's to hot she gets out, says "to hot", then gets straight back in.

I work full time, and until it was apparent our daughter had a problem so did my partner, we both pay tax, ni and the like, this is what my tax money is for. I have no objection to people legitimately claiming benefits, if they are required. I take issue with the lazy arsed folk who do fk all all day and simply expect a hand out, or those who try to manipulate the system to gain financially when they do not require it.

I posted most of this in the news forum where this same discussion is going on, but it's more relevant here I guess.

Anyways, as you were.
