Dental costs - HOW much??

Quite right, I got my sums wrong, it's actually £940 
Root canal: £350
Crown: £495
Filling: £95
...and that's all before VAT
Pulling the tooth was: £60 (new patient consultation), X-rays £(don't know how much) and £48 extraction, plus VAT= £155
I needed a crown and shopped around a bit (with the intention of sticking with whoever I chose) - where I am there is a fair spread of prices with some being cheaper with no discernible difference in quality/experience.
£95 is the going rate for a composite filling here, £495 is a bit much for a crown, but £400 is the minimum I found for a porcelain crown. I think root canals vary because apparently many dentists hate doing them even more than then patient hates receiving them.

Yeah you're no doubt correct, but I needed it doing today as the next opportunity I'll get is two weeks away and I had the choice of just this dentist and another who quoted me £130 for "each quarter" on a filling.£95 is the going rate for a composite filling here, £495 is a bit much for a crown, but £400 is the minimum I found for a porcelain crown. Sod that, I had the bloody thing pulled instead... and THAT still cost £155!

I can quite believe it. A friend of mine married a Mexican girl and when they were on their honeymoon out there he saw they had better quality fillings at a ridiculously cheap price. The next time he went out there he got all of his fillings replaced - although it did help that her relations are dentists.It seems to me that the very expensive figures for Dentistry demonstrate most effectively the benefits of the NHS for General Health care.
If having a tooth crowned is £1000 odd just think what a Heart Bypass operation would cost outside the NHS.

Or a hip replacement £3500 possibly more?

FOOD FOR THOUGHT the NHS is Brilliant that's why even as a pensioner I am happy to pay a fair bit of tax. WE NEED THE NHS.

You can say what you want about prices, but on the quality front, you can get the highest quality work in the world in the uk.
In this country dentistry is very heavily regulated. Hence although there is a range of quality of provision, the range with be far less than in other countries and set around a higher mean quality.
With regards to price, most of the quotes on PH are for private dentistry.
If you have need for any number of crowns and are associated with an NHS dentist it would be a single band 3 charge of about £200. I bet you couldn't beat that price in Hungary if it was more than a couple of crowns involved.
