Anyone on Allopurinol?

After managing to avoid gout for about 3 years through exercise and careful diet I've had a rather nasty attack that's now lasted about 2 months on and off. Thought I'd got rid last week only for my foot and knee to get it last night. So back on the naproxen.

I'm seriously considering allopurinol once this episode is over (the Dr is suggesting this too but up to now I've resisted) and wondered if others were on it and what their experience was.

Be keen to get some "real life" info.

Hi Gary I had similar problems to you, knees seizing up and ankles, at the same I was tested for excess purins but they never found any.
Waited for a clear spell and started allopurinol. Over a period of 3 years the attacks became less and less then none. Allopurinol works by 'washing' the purins out of the body.
Usually you would start on a high dose then back off a bit when you are clear.

Thanks Mark. I had blood tests last week and I have elevated levels of urates (naturally occurring, my Kidney function is fine) so Allopurinol looks like the way forward.

My dad tried allopurinol and febuxostat both seemed to have adverse effects. He's on losarton 100mg now and not had a gout attack for ages.
