Aspergers syndrome
Discussion
I think I may have mild aspergers syndrome,
I have had issue with shyness/quietness, social anxiety and not being able to take in what people say all my life.
Just wondered if anyone could advise me on where to go next, lots of people I speak to are saying that I should speak to my GP but I dont particularly like him and would like to bypass him and go direct to someone whos area is in mental health.
So any advice would be kindly received.

What would getting a diagnosis from your GP help with? Iv got Aspergers, doc said theres no point him sending me off for tests, as it wont achieve anything, apart from a MH specialist saying "You have aspergers".
So do you just get on with life and try your best to fit in/socialise etc?RemainAllHoof said:

Yeah - the GP said if I found out earlier (i.e. alot earlier) then adjustments could have been made at school (which was hell), but as an adult, theres no real point because I am a "high functioning" asperger - its not like I need help getting dressed, or going down to tesco...
Oh, right, so they'd have made teaching more relevant to you, then, I guess?RemainAllHoof said:

who thought it was funny to bully me because I was muslim, and diabetic too. He still cant walk properly to this day.Teaching will never be more relevant, they will still teach a whole bunch of crap that I had no interest in, and I completely failed at those exams at GCSE etc. Although it would have helped with the comments I kept getting from teachers - "He could get alot better grades if he applied himself" - I honestly dont care at all about geography, history, or what shakespere wrote hundreds of years ago.

Always makes me laugh when people come on here asking for online diagnosis for complex conditions

Im having problems at work because of my lack of 'social skills' ie missing bonus's due to not hit 'social' and 'leadership' targets, I dont believe its fair due to this being core of my personality. I feel discriminated against.
My work seems unwilling to help me progress my social skills (ie leadership training courses etc) to keep them level with my other skills, my boss's perception is that I should meet much higher criteria than I have in previous years, the crux of it pretty much is that the goal posts move year on year so you cant hit the maximum.

Thats like most people in most jobs, the goal posts have to move every year, otherwise we would all be members of the board within 10 years. My work seems unwilling to help me progress my social skills (ie leadership training courses etc) to keep them level with my other skills, my boss's perception is that I should meet much higher criteria than I have in previous years, the crux of it pretty much is that the goal posts move year on year so you cant hit the maximum.

Understandable, but i feel their is an underlying issue for me that needs addressing, im not looking for excuses, im looking for a solution. If the solution is that the goal posts have moved beyond my ability then so be it, I will leave the company.
But it would nice to know that I dont have a MH issue which is causing me problems.

So you are being discriminated against because of your personality? Have some sympathy as its tough being shy, but where does this thinking end? Some people are confident, some are not. Everybody is different. Confident people are likely to be successful as leaders... So are tall people. Get over it.
ETA - sorry this is not a solution. Solution is move to a different firm where your social confidence will not be such a career limiting factor. Ultimately though, social confidence is required to lead and motivate others. So you need to work on this skill or accept the fact you currently dont have the talent. There are lot of courses and programmes to improve confidence though. Dont expect your work to pay for everything - they are looking for somebody who already has the requisite skills.
Must say it is a slight p**s boiler that we have to stick a label on something that MOST people will suffer from at some time IMO

More like the teachers actually did something about when I/my parents complain about bullying, they all said "you are being bullied becuase you are 'awkward' - try to be more like them". I got expelled at 14 for going in after being bullied all day, with a metal bar, and beating the s

Re teaching, that's a separate issue altogether!

I see where your coming from but I am not after a pay out, I want to understand the problem so that I can come to a solution (if the solution is a course funded out of my own pocket in my own time then so be it, I just dont feel a course would help me)
I personally dont like the labelling either, I certainly dont want to be labeled.
