At the risk of being accused as lazy, below is a copy of my post on The Lotus Forums to solicit any opinions here -

I've been puzzling over eCOTY in EVO the last few days. The standard Evora swept the board last year in EVO and all the magazines as well as online. The chassis/steering/suspension was deemed to be 'other wordly', 'Lotus are blessed with some sort of alchemy' and so on.

The three major complaints were:

  • It could do with more power,
  • The interior quality 'wasn't up to Porsche standards,
  • The gear change was graunchy
So they launch the Evora S to rave reviews:

  • It has an extra 70bhp, up there with the 911,
  • There is a big improvement in quality (note Sutters comments in the Autocar video)
  • The gear box is 'vastly' improved
And the chassis tweaks move the game even further on - as EVO says nothing else comes close on the North Yorks Moors B roads.

AND IT COMES SEVENTH!!!

Apart from what appears to be a very strong 911 bias, who can explain this to me? Oh, and the cars that were rated higher are up to 3 times more expensive. Surely price/performance comes into the equation?

The list is as follows in descending order. All prices 'basic list':

£106,870 Porsche GT3 RS
£169,545 Ferrari 458 Italia
£164,107 Porsche GT2 RS
£336,000 Lexus LFA
£157,500 Mercedes SLS AMG
£112,500 Audi R8 V10 Spyder
£57,550 Lotus Evora S
£69,950 Nissan GTR
£174,840 Lamborghini Gallardo LP570
£35,750 Ford Focus RS500

Discuss.

That's right. Think of it this way: the previous ECOTY award rewards Lotus for bringing the Evora into the World. Creating the Evora S from the base Evora isn't such a big achievement.

Pretty sure cost isn't even considered for COTY.

remember the job of people employed at EVO is to make money, not print the truth...

Cost does not come into the equation in EVO Car of the Year, just look at the year the Evora won and the Clio 200 was placed 5th ahead of much more expensive equipment.

To be honest I think 2010 has been an epic year for performance cars and with the exception of the Merc SLS I think that EVO has put the Evora S around where it would have been.

Think its due to this being a great year for some cars, that's all.

"The standard Evora swept the board last year in EVO"

nope more people voted the GT3 the better car than the Evora.

One man gave the 911 such a low score, the Evora won by default.

Bit if a fix.

There is something subjective in Evo decision, similar to Gt-R, lower povered Evora suited them better

Price/performance does come into the equation.

- The GT3 RS beats the costlier GT2 RS
- The Lotus beats the GTR (which looks a better value package) and Lambo (which is 3 x as much)!

However money no object they're looking for the best car, (not the best value £/performance car)!
