I recently moved to Spain (Catalunya) and I have an 85 Landrover 90 ex mod back in the UK. I was originally planning to drive the car over and then go through the import and registration process here however the more I read up on the import process the more I'm concerned that it's just not going to be feasible.

Has anyone got any experience with importing classic cars into spain that they could share?

A friend recently imported a 1976 Porsche Targa. It took 3.5 years and has been an utter pain. However it is now registered as an historic and insured accordingly.

I think he went about it in totally the wrong way. He shipped to a Brit garage, recommended by Brits, who used a Brit Gestoria and took it the Malaga ITV station to write the road book and got messed around. Because he was not Spanish, I guess.

A Spanish garage that I have used has imported lots of classic American muscle cars. He knows the guys at the local ITV station and they know him and his work. No problem importing in his view.

Firstly, I would seek a knowledgable Gestoria and follow their advice. I imported my French Boxster and used a recommended Gestoria. She knows all the procedures and will not take crap from any authorities. I think that providing that you are dealing with knowledgeable local professionals, it should not be difficult, if the car can be made fully compliant.

Wouldn't you need an MOD export licence as its an ex military vehicle?
