Listening or watching various sports reports, there is always someone claiming theirs or the opposition as a big club, but what constitutes big?

A mysterious secret formula comprising current position, historic average position, average attendance, and whether they've ever won anything.

For me, attendance is the biggest factor.

Can't really argue with that table. There are so many aspects that could be included that I think it will never be agreed upon.

Equal points for FA cup and League, should be weighted less IMO. 5 games vs 38.

Regardless, it would only change the table slightly, really. A pretty good indication, in my opinion.

So what attendance figure would mean a club is big?

Average 40,000 plus I'd suggest in UK club terms.

In my view (and this is all just semantics really) a big club is >25,000. A really big club is >35,000. It is relatively easy for a club that has someone writing very big cheques to do well, but it is with the acquisition and retention of a large fanbase that a club moves from arriviste to establishment in terms of really deserving a seat around the big boys' table.

What's the matter are your clubs fans not that numerous? Its the only conclusion I can think of.

It covers the big clubs Man U, City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle
