do you guys thinks that the way russia went out was right.
i was under the impression that GD counted first then on results of the level teams.
no one on the box seemed to mention it was unfair.
to be honest id thought the ruskies were trying to stitch up(sorry! im always looking for a conspiracy) the poles or the czechs, then i realised they were going out.
to me it dont seem right using this method.

I heard it explained but I don't remember exactly why it was, it does seem an odd way to do it. They weren't good enough last night and the results matter (although the table shows they should go through) but it would have been interesting how far they could have got, Greece shouldn't stand a chance against Germany.

The rule makes perfect sense to me.

Russia and Greec were on the same points. So, who was the better team ? The team that did best in the game between the two, of course.

The goal difference is all very well but there are circumstances in games, such as sendings off or players being rested that make the number of goals one team can score against a team different than the number another could.

so if italy beat ireland 10-0 and spain draw with croatia 2-2, spain and croatia go through that to me wouldnt be right either (i was told this had been in the papers).
surely its not about the game you played against a given team but your overall performances over 3 games.
there is obviously a good reason why they do it this way but i just dont agree with it.
although if england got through this i would likely change my mind.
and your right about circumstances in games but lets just say russia were 1 up with 10mins left used all subs, 2 of there players clash heads having to go off and greece score 2 goals.
russia go out on one games scoreline, its just not right too me.
i dont know any other leagues that work this way, and groups are a mini league.
