Bentdner's fine is all about revenue protection - a far more heinous crime for UEFA compared to racism or violence.

UEFA have a bit of a track record of lame fines for racism.
Then comes violence & other stuff.
Then comes anything involving England.
Finally, thou shalt not threaten the trough. Long may it remain deep & giving (to the select few).

Serious question, what if he told them to stick the fine? Obviously he can well afford it but how would such a fine be collected? Not as if they can deduct it from his next wage packet is it?
They'd just ban him from playing in Uefa events until he paid up I would think.Einion Yrth said:

According to the Mirror (i know, I know)
"Paddy Power today agreed to pay the £80,000 fine dished out to Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner for exposing a pair of underwear bearing the bookmakers' logo"
Pretty cheap advertising campaign for them, I'd have thought."Paddy Power today agreed to pay the £80,000 fine dished out to Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner for exposing a pair of underwear bearing the bookmakers' logo"

an 80,000 quid problem? no
Disagree. Bendtner's action is a rubbish example to young players coming through. It encourages them to take the mickey out of the game and the authorities who run it. Like I say, I'm no fan of UEFA, but this is an important principle. The fine should hurt or there's no deterrent value. Einion Yrth said:

and the 'official player escorts provided by McDonalds' doesn't take the mickey out of the game?
Not sure what that's got to do with it? I'll agree with you if it helps, but it doesn't alter the Bendtner situation.looking back at your original post in that light, then I sort of agree with you - I thought you were just getting bothered about the pants/arse showing itself

Was he actually sponsored or were they just a pair of pants?
Players cheat all the time during games, swearing at the ref etc, that's far worse than showing your pants. Was it Stephen Ireland with the Superman pants? Thought it was quite funny
Don't get this PH tendency to justify one bad thing by quoting another bad thing. And I think we can be fairly sure that there was a deal between PP and NB. Players cheat all the time during games, swearing at the ref etc, that's far worse than showing your pants. Was it Stephen Ireland with the Superman pants? Thought it was quite funny

Absolutely right that PP should cough up, but along with Bendtner, not instead of him. I'm no UEFA apologist but folk complaining about the seemingly unequal fining system aren't recognising that national federations aren't directly responsible for the behaviour of their fans. Bendtner on the other hand is directly responsible not only for his choice of underpants, but also for his deliberate decision to display them on TV. Even if ignorance was accepted as a defence, which it never is in law, Bendtner's protestation that he 'didn't know there was a problem' is just risible and an insult.
You are, of course, a UEFA apologist. I don't agree with your stance, and neither do many others, but to claim otherwise undermines your point severely. We can all infer from your post that low fines for racism and violence are excusable because they're out of national federation control. This is, to argument, what building your house on quicksand is to structural integrity.
There can be no 'poor[er] example to youngsters' than the racism, hooliganism and general violence present in many facets of the game today. Arse advertising? A laughably disproportionate fine, serving no other purpose than to warn against any other acts that may endanger UEFA revenue.

It maybe a bad example, but what is worse is UEFA not punishing racists as heavily. Its the footballing equivilent of a school bully being given a lunchtime detention while the geek who blew a raspberry had to stay behind after school for an hour to write lines.I would love it if Paddy Power came out and said "not only are we going pay Bendner's fine, but we also condemn the fines for racist chanting handed out and ask UEFA to make an $80,000 charity donation"
