Once upon a time there was international league football. For example, when the English League team played the Scottish League team, any player who played in the respective leagues was eligible to play regardless of nationality. It was always very much 'second place' to international football and eventually interest in it withered and it died.

But nowadays with so many foreign players playing in so many leagues it might be a good time to revive these old fixtures. I'd love to see a team from, say, the English Premiership play a team from La Liga. I suspect it might be a far better spectacle than watching nationality based teams etc etc. Anyone else agree?

It never was before, but there's no reason why there couldn't be a competitive league setup between different national leagues.

As far as I remember, these inter-league games were friendlies, but played in a highly competitive spirit.

Clubs pay huge wages to their star players - getting them released for proper international duty is bad enough - they're not going to release them for some mickey mouse inter league tournament.

If it's entertaining enough to attract very expensive advertising, clubs will do what they're told.

I've wondered about this, I'd love to see it, but suspect it'll never happen.

Messi and the prancing pony in the same team? Wow.
