Discus....

Cant say I disagree. I don't think we should be 'sniffing' around youngsters that are obviously foreign to the country, such as Adnan Januzaj.

Now if he'd lived here since he was 5 and actually wanted to play for England, that is a different argument.

Do people still care about the English football team?

Lost interest in the national team a fair while ago.

However I have no issue with people playing for a country if they can prove a link - eg: grandparents, parents etc.

I'm not particularly keen however on the "oh you've lived here for five years, you can play for our team" approach.

We could use the argument that if England fans cant pronounce your surname the you can't be English.

I think schoolboy level should be the point where you have to decide what nation you want to represent, if any

home nations agreements mean this fella couldn't play for England, you have to have gone to school in the country for at least a few years - but that's an internal matter between England Scotland Wales and NI

John Barnes played for England under this rule

how about Matt Le Tissier and Graeme Le Saux, neither of them are technically 'English', never went to school in England

Nacho Novo said he would have applied for a UK passport if he would be eligible to play for Scotland, but he was already 21 I think when he went to Scotland

Under that rule Ryan Giggs would have been an England player.

no, Schoolboy level should be when you DECIDE where you want to play as an adult

he was forced to play for England schoolboys by the rules, and logistics too I expect (well, I suppose he could have just not played)
it's not really sensible for a Scottish-born school kid living in London to travel to Glasgow to train

Is it all decided by place of birth? I just read that Mo Farah was born in Somalia.

As we all move about more and the world gets smaller it becomes more and more of a muddle.

no, not just birth

obviously some people move when they are children

others want to play for their parents nationality

I'm torn, because I do think people should of course be allowed to be fully integrated into their new country if they emigrate, so why can't they play football for that country?

but, I don't want to see a 'transfer scheme' for internationals

Who gives a toss what Jack Wilshire thinks? STFU and play football, that's what you're paid for. If we need someone to think, we'll call Stephen Fry.

Jack Wilshire has posed a very reasonable question IMO and worthy of debate - hence this thread and many others on the interweb.

Bit harsh twig , I'm no Wilshire fan , but it's always nice to hear the pro's opinion.

maybe, but let's hear from one of the more articulate senior players. Wilshire is a talented player, but he strikes me as a young man whose life is on the brink of running out of control. The sleeve of tattoos, the smoking, 2 kids with 2 women and still only 21. He should remember what he's good at, keep a low profile and knuckle down to it.

By all means let's have the players' opinion. Lampard, Gerrard, Scholes, Giggs, et al, what do they think. They might have an opinion that's worth something.

A fair question, but it doesn't seem to be one that other sports (cricket, rugby, athletics, cycling (thinking of Froome, so only sort of...)), seem to get too vexed about.

As England Football seem to have trouble finding home grown players to compete at the highest level of the world stage, then absolutely why shouldn't they?
