If Hodgeson continues to pick Rooney to play out of position will we fail to qualify for the next round?

How about if he fails to drop him?

Hodgson needs to stop playing Rooney full stop. 9 world cup games 0 goals, what about those other games when he did play in his position. Or that chance that would have leveled us against the Italians, he never even got it on target, never mind back of the net.

I'm of the opinion that you play your best players in their best position.
Rooney was top scorer in qualifying but on club form the striker should be Sturridge. Rooney - despite his talent, wages, history etc couldn't perform a role for the team on the left. He left Baines exposed. Although this didn't change in the second half when Rooney moved to the right.

Did Rooney cause Italy problems down the right? No.

So, we need the best three in the 4-2-3-1 and at the moment Rooney is keeping someone out of the team. Ox? Lallana? Are they better than him on the left?
If they are they should play.

No-one should be untouchable.

Flawed question really. The better question is would our chances of winning be better if he was dropped.

The poll question is to simplistic. Either play him in a central position or drop him.

If he's dropped (and he was our top scorer in qualifying) and we don't score enough goals for the tournament to be judged a success its time to get shot of Woy.

Rooney should play and he should play in his proper position.

The question specifically allows for him to be either played in the correct position or dropped.

The question is designed really to see if our manager can make any right decision on this - either drop him or play him in the correct position. If he does neither, then the manager should take the blame and should be sacked, before he can resign.

As an outsider I agree with this. If he doesn't play well then drop him. No one is entitled to play, it has to be earned.

I dont care who he is or what he has done for his club.
Rooney has never done anything worthy of note while wearing an England shirt.
He should be dropped, full stop.

He's got 39 goals in 93 games hardly nothing. He got a pretty good assist on Saturday as well.

He has to play for me but he has to play in his proper position either at no 9 or no 10,

Only 13 of those 39 goals were against teams currently in the World Cup. And very few of those were in tournament football. Most of his goals have come in tournament qualifiers against the might of Andorra, Kazakhstan, Belarus and San Marino.

What is factual is that on the big stage for England he has failed to deliver time and time again.

Can you list goals scored by the other striking options in the squad against teams currently in the World Cup?

I'm looking forward to the justification of the next generation's Emile Heskey.

Why would it be Rooney's fault if we fail to qualify?

Sounds to me like hes the easy fall guy for most fans these days.

Sturridge, Welbeck and Lambert all have one goal each against teams playing in WC2014.

Interestingly Welbeck's games:goals ratio is not far off Rooney's.

If you want stats and how easy it is to get goals in qualifying/friendlies look at the man Crouch.

42 games...22 goals.

You can't blame Rooney for the position he is playing in.He is a top striker let him decide it is not about the manager in this instance. He is capable performing for his country something is not right if he isn't.

Quite.

You have to go as far back as Owen and then Shearer for the last English attacker who scored against big teams on the big stage.

If he gets dropped and we fail to progress, what will the next poll be? Or will folks just go back to the Man U forum and carry on there?

This is like the Blame Beckham campaign all over again - common denominator being.....
