Travelling to European away games without a match ticket?
Discussion
Last night I sat for hours trying to figure out how to get to Liepzig for the European Conference League final. Problem is that I don't have a match ticket and it's unlikely that I'll get one from the miserly club allocation of 11,500 as I'm not a season ticket holder. I'm sure there must be some on here that have done similar to see either their club or England, so my question is:- how likely am I to be able to buy a single ticket in Leipzig on the day of the match?
I don't mind paying over the odds to some degree, but not a silly amount. Are there always touts at these games? Do locals buy tickets and sell them on? Are there other ways of getting match tickets?
You'll have worked out that I'm a Palace fan and therefore have minimal experience of this stuff. To be perfectly honest I don't want to spend hundreds getting there to sit in a nearby bar and watch it on TV...

I'll ask my brother and get back to you.
Him and a load of my mates where at the Palace game in Krakow last night.
Originally they all had tickets for the Shaktar Donetsk end for a mere £11 each before booking travel and hotels.
But they did end up in the Palace end. Great result too.

I'm seriously planning to travel, as I will of course sit in a bar and watch on TV if that's the only option.
I've been to every 'significant' Palace game since 1967 apart from Sheff Wed (A) when we were very nearly relegated, as my son got married that day (we had phones on during the church service

That's an online tout site. I've managed Arsenal Tickets through them before (Much more successful through traditional routes these days).
But yeah you're looking at £1k a ticket. Not sure if it would be the same on the ground in Leipzig

Haha.
Since 1967, wow.
My Dad used to take me when Docherty was a player in the 70s.
As I grew up I remember that they'd open the gates at half time and you'd get in for free.
Found a ticket the other day for Palace v Chelsea, 1985. £6, bought at the ground before the match.
Can't afford football now

I was a season ticket holder for many years but moved away. I'm a gold club member, but I won't have enough 'points' to get a club allocated ticket. By hook or by crook I've managed to get tickets for all the important games in the past but I just don't know whether there are locals or ballot winners selling on tickets for European matches....
One of my mates (fellow Spurs) did exactly that for the EL final last year - turned up to Bilbao without a ticket, by himself - flew to Bordeaux and then hired a car and drove the rest due to the ridiculous surge pricing of flights and hotels. Managed to somehow find a ticket on the day (paid £400 from memory) then slept in his hire car overnight, drove back to Bordeaux the following day. Maintains it was the best night of his life!
In 2004 three of us went to France for the World Cup match England/Columbia in Lens.
We had two tickets.
When we arrived we found the main drag through town and wrote on a piece of cardboard "Ticket wanted. Cash ready" Took less than thirty minutes to buy a ticket (which we were able to compare to our genuine tickets). The face value of the tkt we bought was around €30 from memory and for which we paid €100.

Yes you can. What you can't afford is Premier League football.Since 1967, wow.

I go to a local non-league club for £7, instead of my Premier League club (which I have been a fan of since 1978 and seen them in all 4 divisions, and in Europe a couple of glorious times) who want about £100 for a match. f
k that. This local club is in a play off final on Saturday, it's been a great season and I've made a few new friends along the way. Awesome. It's so much better.Voldemort said:

Sounds hopeful, thanks. I've booked all the travel now and an Airbnb so just need a match ticket...We had two tickets.

With or without a ticket I would go. Leipzig is a brilliant city with tons of bars in the centre.
We went to Prague for the West Ham game a few years back, and watched the game with 2000 other Hammers in a nightclub. One of the best nights in my life.
I used to travel to Leipzig regularly for work. Fly to Berlin then get the train down was my travel of choice.

Hired a vw campervan and drove to Madrid for the spurs liverpool CL final, worth ever minute but had no chance of a ticket. Stayed at a couple of campsites on the way down and parked at the airport (and slept there after the game). Ended up watching it in a bar, the daytime experience was amazing. The road trip was the best part.
I have been to leipzig (concert) and it’s very German, hardly anyone spoke English outside of the hotel but still managed to get to Colditz castle. Nice city.

I was in Porto with Forest last month and there were some fans selling their tickets to raise a bit of cash. Seems crazy to me, but I sort of can understand the attraction of watching the game in a big square with other fans drinking beers, compared to being in the stadium an hour early, no beers and then a 45 min hold back in the stadium after the game. So you might get lucky that way. Alternatively, as it's a neutral stadium/country, there should be plenty of tickets ending up in the hands of touts to be bought on match day. The issue here is they will start super expensive, but reduce in price the closer to KO time. It's just a case of holding your nerve! I did this in Stuttgart for England v Ecuador in 2006, but bottled it with 2hrs to KO and paid EUR 300...s
t game too, but still look back on it with fond memories!Good luck!

As a Spurs fan, I went to the 2019 Champions League final without a ticket. There was a ballot and I missed out. The guy who sits next to me was luckier and got one. Another friend of mine missed out but his friend got one. But there was no way I wasn't going to go an experience possibly a once in a lifetime occasion of the team I've supported all my life at a Champions League final.I don't mind paying over the odds to some degree, but not a silly amount. Mrs 48k thought it hilariously stupid that I would travel to Madrid and stay over in a hotel just to sit in a bar and watch the game on TV but that whole Saturday was absolutely epic - from soaking up the atmosphere in the square in central Madrid, baking hot sunshine watching the entertainment, to then going to the fan park and enjoying beers and camaradarie with total strangers, meeting up with friends who had tickets, to then meandering back in to town and finding a little bar on a side street with some locals in which was showing the game. It was just a fanastic day and one I will never forget. OK the result was bad and next day wasn't the greatest but the Liverpool fans in the hotel were very gracious at breakfast and it's an experience I will never forget and glad I did it. The bonus was that due to a lucky bet on the semi final results and some airmiles I did the whole trip for £20 plus food and drinks.
Just go, even if you don't manage to get a ticket. Try ticket selling websites Ticombo was one my mates used a lot in Euro 2024, got a few tickets from there.
Can manage to pick some up on the day but you're never 100% sure if they're legit, Euro 2024 all tickets were digital so it was there and your ticket in the app before paying the money, much easier.
Try home end, try hospitality, few of my mates did that for the Atletico away game back in 2017, might cost you a bit but it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Unless there's ID checks or pick up with tickets, offer a fellow ST a lot of money for one.
I was 50/50 on going the FA Cup final during COVID, ended up going, I'd pay a lot of money to relive that day, especially with where we are as a club now.

Great stories from those of you who've done it - thanks.
So, I put my big girl pants on and booked all the travel and accommodation etc. without Palace definitely even in the final. I've put a cheeky little bet on Shakhtar to progress on Thursday after the second leg of the semi final; they're 20/1 to actually do it so it'll cover most of my costs if they do... and a bottle of something strong to mute the pain.
Roll on Thursday.
