Why do they do it?! when successful it doesn't add any kudos to penalty and when unsuccessful (as tends to be the case) you look like a twerp.
How is it that strikers don't learn! The penalties in the Champions League final were embarrassing and when I saw Kane stutter the other night I knew what was coming.
If I were a manager and saw one of my players doing it they would rot on the bench for a month

I basically agree. Whilst I'm no expert I'd suggest that simply from a psychological point of view it implies lack of confidence and conviction. It has been said that the idea is to see some sort of reaction from the keeper and adjust to that but if you are confident, why not just smack it in the corner?
