The BBC are now reporting that a major Solar storm is to hit the earth today between 06.00 - 10.00 hrs GMT.

Experts warn it could disrupt power grids, satellite navigations systems and plane routes.

Lets just pray that it is not the microchip frying type!

This is how it starts! 1st all the electric goes down, then the zombies appear.

Start nailing crooked planks of wood against all the windows. Stock up on water, bread, cheese and Strongbow. Then don't forget your old jam jars to pee into.

Well so far tv and radio ok, but my wireless cctv cam is snowed out.

That episode of Horizon was suspiciously well timed then. No end of civilisation here, maybe these solar flares aren't as deadly as the TV tells me.

'The worst for 5 years' apparently. Did the world end 5 years ago or did I miss it?

That's odd.

I found this big sheet of numbers in a time capsule buried 25 years ago, and have only just worked out that it tells me the dates, GPS location and numbers killed in every major disaster in the last 25 years.

But it ends "EE". Wonder what that means.

Time will tell.

I've lost my internet, the tv went pop, and my iMac has stopped....

'One huge solar flare in 1972 cut off long-distance telephone communication in the US state of Illinois.'

I can hardly contain my indifference biggrin

Chance of seeing the Northern Lights at lower altitudes apparently...

What sort of time is best to catch these; dusk or later on in the night?

I thought that was you peering over a wall but keeping your head down, looking on while chaos ensues all around you. The morse code explanation makes some sense too I admit.

My Electric Arc Furnace has been working fine all morning.

Which is extremely unusual.

They usually recommend local midnight but its more a case of if a storm is happening at your midnight you have the best chance of seeing something rather than there is a better chance of a storm at midnight if you see what i mean.

bottom line, is it needs to be dark, cloud free and away from light pollution at the same time as a storm, this one is happening now so not much use here at 2pm. keep any eye on the planetary K index halfway down the left column on http://www.spaceweather.com/ to see if the storm continues tonight. A value of 5 you may see something low in the northern sky in Scotland, it would need to be closer to 8 or 9 for the south, although dont rely on the website data!!!
