I use a steam cleaner at work but it only lasts a year before it needs sending away for servicing. This is because I'm in a hard water area and this causes the it to fur up. Can anyone advise me if it's worth using deionised or distilled water to avoid or reduce this problem. Or is there an additive that's safe to breath maybe? Or even a water softening filter?

I'd do the sums, tickious.

I suppose that buying deionised or distilled watre would cost a lot, as a steam cleaner must use a lot of water.
A water softener could be more useful but you need to include your comsumables, which are mostly table salt.

How about a gallon of kettle descaler once a ?fortnight?? heta it up, let it stand pour away and flush. Or raher some industrial version:
