I mentioned in the Rosetta thread that I'd seen some twitter posts about something being announced soon called Lunar Mission One. Well their website has gone live.
Basically a project to send a lander to the South pole of the Moon and do some deep drilling (20m+) in around 10 years.
First stage is crowd funding (via KickStarter) to raise £600k in the next 28days to get the the money to finance the initial project management and programme planning phase.

Science isn't always about doing something for an expected result. Sometimes it is just about finding out.
We've never drilled into the moon less than a few inches. In fact, the Apollo astronauts had extreme difficulty driving in, and then extracting, the drills they used. The moons regolith is far harder than had been originally anticipated.
And, of course, due to technical and safety limitations the Apollo missions never varied much beyond the equatorial regions of the moon, so no drilling of any sort has ever been carried out in the more northerly or southerly latitudes.
