I suddenly wondered what had happened to the super deep borehole that the Russians were drilling.

A quick wiki revealed that the project was abandoned. What a shame; I am sure it could have yielded lots of good information about the planet and potentially opened up possibilities of limitless free, clean energy if the Earth's hot core could be somehow tapped into.

I think this was a case where multi-national cooperation and funding would have been justified.

Any similar research going on?

You dont have to drill that far for 'limitless' energy.

Previous geothermal borehole experiments have demonstrated that if you pump cold water into hot rock you get hot water back...but only for a time. Before too long the rock cools down and the sustainable heat transfer rate from surrounding rocks wasn't high enough to be economically viable at the time.

I've seen that page before, and my reaction to the above picture was...that's it?!? And why is it welded shut? Were they scared something might crawl out of it someday?

As an aside, my dad was an extra in the film "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" (the 1959 version)

I should think it's to stop people messing about with it rather than something crawling out of it.

Under that there will be a cement plug several hundred feet thick as well to stop anything coming out.
