We found it at Geevor in the spoils towards the sea. My son really wants to know what is is. My best guess is stibnite (the black striated crystals) but I'm not sure. The rock is about the size of a small egg.

Thanks for replying. The colour is right, jet black and shiny but the crystals are long and thin?

Thread resurrection!

We bought our son a USB microscope for Christmas so I thought I'd have a closer look.

Could be tourmaline?

We found this in the Lakes a few days ago near Mungrisedale. I think it's scheelite.

I'm now working my way through our collection, old and new, it's addictive.

The white material is quartz, the black stuff pyroxene and / or biotite mica ???

I did a geology degree back in the late 80's but was coupled with Astronomy which I was more interested in .... so that diagnosis might be rubbish !
