That is close.

Most are much further away.

The nearest (M31 - the Andromeda Galaxy) is "only" 2 million light years away.

Seemingly, the Earth has been hit by such flares in the past - such a flare a 'mere 30,000 light years away (bloody hell) affected the atmosphere.
