Noise when turning at slow speeds, Golf mk4

hi i have a golt gt tdi 150 mk4 and recently when turning the wheel at low speeds (such as when parking) a high pitched noise is made, if i stop turning the wheel then the noise stops so im guessing it might not be any belts. Any one got any suggestions?

Power steering motor on its way out?

I remember there was some sort of campaign at VW regarding power steering. Can't remember what it was though. Check the fluid and maybe replace it. Make sure it is the green vw spec stuff. I'd have a look at the pads/discs and clean them off.

Belt squealing on the pulley.
The power steering pump loads up more on the belt when you are steering lots at low speeds.
The fix is check belt condition and tension. Also sometimes the grooves in the pulleys polish up and need to be roughened up with abrasives.

Check the level of your power steering fluid as any lack of fluid will cause the symptom you suggest. Probably just needs a top up

Either (in order of likely)

a) Alternator pulley is not freewheeling properly.
b) Ribbed belt tensioner has had it
c) PAS pump is knackered

less likely
d) Rack is kaputten

I'd replace the belt, I had the same problem on my car and a new belt sorted it, cost less than a tenner.

Check the PAS fluid levels - might be low. Also check for any leaks.
If it needs topping up, the VWs use a special mineral oil (at least my 2001 Mk4 did). You can't use normal PAS fluid.

No.


As others have said check the belt and fluid level, if the level is low check the pump and rack for leaks the rack is a very common fault.
