Went out to get 4 new tyres and what a nightmare it turned out to be! The locking wheel nut tool had been rounded off previously, poor design IMO. Anyway managed to get 3 off with a master key but the final once didn't budge.

Tried alsorts this eve trying to get a socket on it etc but no joy, the fact the outer casing turns and it's recessed in the wheel makes it a bleddy nightmare, the tyre fitter said they will weld a bolt onto it to remove it but said it could mark the wheel.

Are there any alternatives left to try? Or is the method the tyre fitter suggested the best way? The alloys are in good nick so would be a shame to mark them but needs must

Simple job yet a pain int eh arse!

Use a small punch to crack off the outer ring bit then smash a socket onto it.

Can you get a chisel into the key groove and tap it around?

had a similar problem on a mates car recently...

I popped the key in the lathe and drilled a hole right through. Then I held it on the wheel bolt as a guide, and drilled into the wheel bolt with a cobalt drill. I then tapped out the hole and bolted the tool onto the wheel bolt, good and tight. This stopped it slipping off and I was able to remove it easily.

have done the welded nut trick on a few and the alloy did get scorched (it was a renault scenic so i didn't care - car deserved it).

remember to crank up the other bolts as tight as you can before working on the locking one.

Looks like it's been gunned.

We had to call the AA when it happened to us. The guy didn't even bat an eyelid and got the nut straight off.

Nah, doesn't need to have been gunned, those types of nuts are complete st, I've just done one exactly the same for a mate by welding an M12 nut on it and cracking it off with a normal socket.
No marks to the alloy if you do it properly.

Why can't you drill it and use a screw extractor, commonly referred to as an Easy Out. (They have a left handed thread).

It doesn't seem the best design I'd agree. Welding a nut on does seem the easiest solution, just be a shame to damage the alloys, I'm hoping they will be careful! Problem is I need it done for Saturday as the tyre is knackered hence the hurry.

That dynomec kit looks interesting, although surely a tyre fitting place should have one as it seems a remotely common thing.

Have to say I don't think I'll bother with locking nuts next time! At the end of the day if they wanted your wheels they would probably have a master key set off ebay and would have thm anyway!

I've tried drifting it out but no joy, regarding easy outs, I think it's on there too tight, hasn't been off for ages and judging by the others it's possible been over tightened in the past

So long as they wrap the rest of the alloy up and cool the nut after welding the alloy should be fine. You might get a few small heat marks from spatter but they'll polish off easily.
